not sure how to put this delicately! ...

Hope this isn't too explicit! ...

Over the last couple of weeks, Buckley, intact and 14 months old, has been frequently and vigorously pleasuring himself. He's mostly just lying on the floor until he's done, but this morning he added a little 'humpy dance' to the finish.

So, is this par for the course with an intact male of this age? Does this behavior continue indefinitely when males aren't neutered.

I'm not considering this to be a problem, but am curious as to what to expect as he continues to mature.

:ah: Oh my. When Nigel was about that age we had our first glimpse of a wild dog....Emma came home from the groomers looking and smelling goooood! Nigel went crazy:crazy: for her, wouldn't leave her alone for anything:hugs:! Eventually he calmed down, but for me it was enough, and it wasn't long after this incident that we had him fixed. I don't think Nigel ever got to the stage you are referring to....so I don't know the answer.

My male dog is not intact but he was a late neuter. The humping isn't an issue but the noise of the act is .....I've heard myself suggesting he "get a room."

We had a standard poodle cross, growing up, that used to do that; At least he kept it to my parents bedroom :O

Hmmm. Moe is 15 months old and still intact, although we just were at the vets and set up an appt for his pre-surgery bloodwork for next month.
When he was younger, he would hump the big giant bed that I got him, but I would just say "no hump" and he would stop. That's the only use that bed ever got! LOL!
He sometimes will lick a bit "down there" and check his parts, but he never does anything close to what you are describing.
The vet had asked if we notice any interest in female dogs, and really, other than his friend, who we avoided, who was coming out of her first heat, no. He didn't try to hump his friend, he just sniiiiiiifffed and sniiiiifffed and wanted to lick her. He was in love, but not the wham bam thank you ma'am kind.

Louie is now 19 months old and has never done this. He did go though a phase of humping his sister about 10 times a day, but a few months ago he stopped doing it. I need to knock on wood, I am just stunned by how little impact being intact seems to have on him. He only briefly licks himself just for cleaning purposes. Now if there were a female in heat around I'm sure our whole world would be turned upside down.

In all these years with all these Newfs...I've never yet had one do anything like that. Maybe the difference is there has always been males and females around and the females taught them young not to do that? They try it on another dog first ..and the first time they do, one of the senior females shows them the colgate smile and it's done with.

I didn't have my lil boy Zacc neutered till he was 22 months old and he never did anything like that...although we definately knew when there was a female in heat in the area. However, before we had him neutered he started marking in the house and challenging our other male for pack rank. After two fight we decided to get him neutered. After he was neutered he calmed down and stoped marking, we are happy we did it...although you may get a different reaction from Zacc.

Apologies for sharing TMI! Thanks for the feedback though ...

Hmmm ... he's only around other dogs when we walk, although there are plenty of dogs in the neighborhood, one of whom could be a female in heat, for all I know. there's always mutiple dogs barking at a house that's close by, some sound big, some small, but this isn't the kind of area where I'm about to go over there and investigate ...

he's friendly with another female newf who's spayed, but he doesn't see her often. last time was in the spring (he would have been 10 months) and he was very, very interested in her, and attempted to mount, but stopped when I gave a correction command.

otherwise, he hasn't really done much of anything to people's legs, furniture, other dogs, etc.

but, it does seem a bit out of the ordinary, based on the responses ...
