On April 22-28, Carlisle, PA. Is anyone going to this? What is it all about? What goes on at these things? Is it worth the 3hr roadtrip? Sounds like an interesting event.

If it was only 3 hours away then it would certainly be worth a (long) day trip. I've never been but I can imagine that there are several tons of Newfies wandering around drooling on everything. Seeing that is worth the drive.

Wow maybe I can talk my hubby into going, Carlisle is only about a hour from here. If anyone is going it would be great to meet some of you.

If you live close to Carlise PA you SHOULD go to the Specialty by all means. You will have such a wonderful time. Learn so much, meet so many people and places to shop for newfie items. Best of all herds of newfies. Newfies everywhere. All colors shapes and sizes. YES YOU SHOULD GO

Check out the website and choose the day (although I bet that one day will not be enough) that has an activity that you may be interested in seeing. The honors parade is really nice and the rescue parade is usually a tear jerker but lots of smileS because these newfies now have a wonderful home. If you are intered in draft work see the draft test....same for obedience. The website is http://www.geocities.com/newpendelnewfclub/2002.html

I am so bummed because our house has not sold so we cannot attend. We even had our girls entered in the draft test, honor parade and rescue parade.
Oh well there is always next year.

Another thing to add. The decorated cart contest is really lot and lots of fun--for spectators as well as the participants. OH just go!!!!!!! You will never regret it!!!!

GO GO GO GO GO GO

Russell & I are going!!! This will be our 3rd year!!!

Our first National was in 2000, in Warwick, Rhode Island. It was a 2 day drive, and we had a fabulous time!!! Cora got her CD and Sadie was in the Rescue Parade. It was the first time they had had a Rescue Parade in quite awhile. There are wonderful things... as Jeannie mentioned. There's Obedience, Conformation, Draft Tests... Decorative carting.... There is shopping NOT TO BE BELIEVED!!! In the evening, there are all sorts of events.... including a working dog reception which is always really neat.

Last year, the Nationals were in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Again it was wonderful... There's nothing like getting up to take your Newf out in the morning, so they can do their business, and to see many many other newfs milling around!!!

This year, Kira is entered in the rescue parade. We are donating ring favors for all dogs entered in the Rescue Parade in memory of our beloved Sadie. We picked them up this afternoon, and I am sooooo excited!!! (winking at Jeannie).

So, in my opinion... it's worth it.... I'd drive 2-3 days to get to the Nationals....

Next years Nationals are in New York State, and the following year they will be in Wisconsin!!! All with in a day or twos drives.

So, if you're near enough to come, by all means DO!!!

I read on the '02 National site that the '03 Nationals will be held at the Holiday Valley Resort near Ellicottville, N.Y. It appears to be 45 minutes to an hour south of Buffalo. I did not see any firm dates yet but only browsed thru the site quickly.

I know this is going to sound stupid but, do you have to be some kind of a member and can you take your puppy even though they aren't in anything? Sorry I am still a novice to all of this but I am learning

Thanks

Good question!

Does anyone know if there's an admission just to go in and browse at the events? I'm thinking of taking a day or two off and driving down from the Toronto area mid-week - likely Wednesday (without our dog).

NO admission!!! Take your puppy and GO. best socialization your puppy will every get!! All newf (well any breed) are welcome and they don't have to be entered in the show to enjoy the specialty with you.

Pack up and GO!!! I envy everyone that is attending. I wanted to go so BAD. Darn house that didn't sell so we could go!!!!!

Annie, don't forget to bring my ring favors from the rescue parade. I can't wait to see what it is (me winking back at ya) In fact bring lots of things back for me. Anything maybe a t-shirt Yea a t-shirt. I'll call you.....

Dogs are welcome even if they are not entered. However, you must keep them under control at all times. If they are in heat, it would be a bad idea to take them along.

Because this is an AKC sanctioned event, prong and halti collars are prohibited.

Everyone takes supplies for their own dogs, including food and water.

If you guys can come, do! It's an amazing event, and you won't be sorry. Maybe next year, we can have a "NewfNet" gathering.

There is are few sure-fired ways of getting advanced notice about the National:

1. Join the NCA- With a membership to the NCA, you get a subscription to "Newf Tide", which is a fabulous magazine about Newfs. It's published 4 times a year, and there is always a suplement in the 4th issue reagarding the upcoming National. It lists hotels, dates when you can mail in your room requests, registrations, etc.

2. Watch the NCA website for informaiton. Often, the host club will have a special website devoted to the National.

3. If you don't want to join the NCA, you can still subscribe to "Newf Tide". It's well worth the money.

We're taking our laptop, and if I'll try and post pictures. If any of you think you will be there, email me, and maybe we can meet!!!

Annie

Couple of things that Annie forgot. Take plenty of money. There is so much to buy. Also, if I am thinking correctly cannot anyone watch the top twenty? I remember watching it last year and I didn't pre register. At least if I did I don't remember.

In regards to the Top Twenty, they seem to have changed it this year. Exerpts from the Catalog:

"The attire for spectators is "after 5". The fee is $10.00 per person, which entitles the spectators to a complimentary program, the chocolate fantasy reception and a cash bar with crudite. You must be registered for the Specialty in order to attend. Seating is limited to 350 persons, and pre-registration for the event is required. Registration is done on a first come, first serve basis. The deadline for registering was February 15th."
The attire for exhibitors is Black Tie. This is similar to the Top Twenty event that saw in Warwicke two years ago. Last year's event included both conformation and obedience, and was much more casual, and open to the public.

It is alot of fun. However, we opted to give this one a miss.... Russell can't eat chocolate or drink alcohol due to his diabetes.

As for lots and lots of money.... Jeannie is 100% right!!!!

Well, I think I am going to go but not sure only because I don't want to leave Jake in his crate that long through the day although I am sure he would be fine I would just feel guilty. I would love to take him but he is not that great on the leash yet and I don't want to be fighting him every step of the way. Of course maybe I can get the neighbor to come over to play for awhile her 4 year old is always asking if Jake can go over there to play with him LOL.

Great.... Like I said, we'll be taking our laptop, and I'll be checking into Newf Net every evening. You can also email me as well, so let me know what day and time you'll be coming, and maybe we can meet!

I am so glad you will be posting from Nationals! Last year when I joined this forum while waiting for our puppy I so enjoyed seeing the pictures and hearing how fun it sounded. I told DH we were going to go this year but I didn't win. How 'bout next year he says. Then I see it's in New York. Well he was born and reared there....I'll NEVER get him back there LOL. Are the Nationals ever held on or closer to the west coast? Ohhh I really want to attend one.
Some day........

It would be great if you guys could meet up. Annie should be fairly easy to spot. She'll be the woman walking around with a big black dog on a leash and .... uh .... no that won't work. Better come up with plan B.
