Newf

I am in the process of bringing a Newfie into our home in the next couple of months and have been reading some great books on training, grooming and health risks involved in owning a Newf. However, I also want to read books with my 5 year old about how to treat, love and care for this awesome breed. This week we bought a story book called Newf by Marie Killilea. This is a great book for children of all ages, as well as adults. It's about a Newf who lives in a cottage on a bluff overlooking the ocean. This beautiful black new finds a stray kitten in need and the story depicts how their relationship develops overtime. This book has really helped my son understand how even the most unlikely individuals can become great companions. Does anyone have any recommendations for other books about Newfs that would be age appropriate for a 5 year old? Thanks!

How about the Lewis and Clark Expedition books told through the eyes of Seaman, Lewis's newf who traveled with them. It is very entertaining and educational!

The Lighthouse Dog, available on Amazon, is a very delightful short story suitable for a 5 year old ( as well as adults!!!!!)

I have a child about the same age as yours. Really, only a couple of things need to be said. The dog is not a horse so you cannot ride him. If you dont want to share your toys, especially your stuffed animals, keep them in the designated area. Oh, and please remember to flush the toilet! While i do supervise there really have been no instances of concern. She understands that obi's crate is his private space and if he goes in there or walks away from her then he has had enough and she should let him be. This rarely happens. They love to play hide and seek. The treats might play a role... Dd like to read to obi, too. Sometimes obi obliges to be the patient requiring a check up and multiple casts. Frequently he becomes a pillow.

I have always like Rhoda Lerman's "In the Company of Newfies." Her follwup book on the infamous litter of 17 is a bit over written, IMHO.

Also look up Dr Sophia Yin (sadly passed away) but she has some great info and posters for kids. I use them all the time

The one thing I wil say is remeber a newfie is a dog and still behaves like a dog and needs to be trained like any other dog, they are not born placid and easy going. A very few are, but it is most likely living with someone who does not realise they train anyway. They are still a dog, that has dog issues..... I love my pack and they are great, but we train a lot, all the time and this makes them great to be around. But they still have individual personalities even living and bein trained by the same people. Love newfies, will go to bat for any newfie. But the kids also need to be trained and made aware. Some dogs, even newfies do not like kids to be too rough on in their faces all the time. But most of all enjoy your newf member. Make them part of your family and they will be yours forever...... :) Ronnie

I agree with Brad. This book I keep by my bed, as I can open any page and be drawn into is. I can not imagine anyone reading "In the Company of Newfies" and not want one of their own.
