Hi, I am thinking about rescuing a Newf/Lab mix puppy and so have been doing a lot of research and lurking to learn about the breed. This is my first time posting.
What I am wondering is what does a typical Newf puppy weigh, look like, etc., at 12 wks? I really wanted to rescue a Newf, preferably an older one, but this puppy is the closest thing to a Newf in my area. Most rescues don't adopt out of area. When I get a Newf "for real," to show and get really involved in the breed, I'd like to get a well-bred puppy, but since right now I am just looking for a loving companion I thought it would be much better to rescue and save some poor dog's life.
I would appreciate any input you have. This puppy is about 30 lbs. or so and could gain some weight, he is maybe 12 or so in. at the withers and has a fluffy stand-off puppy coat. He's all black with just a tuft of white at the chest. Big tight paws, like a cat's, but I can't tell if they're webbed or not (what's that?). He has some feathering like a husky or shepherd maybe, but not typical Newfie legs (as far as I can tell). He has a good blocky muzzle, tighter flews (can you tell on a puppy?). But his stop isn't that sharp, more slopy... he does have the Newfie "tuft" on the forehead. He has black gums and some black spots on his tongue-- do Newfs have that?
Here is his pic & bio-- it says Lab/Chow but they think now Newf/Lab: http://web1.petfinder.org/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=812758&adTarget=468dogbaby&SessionID=3ce74ece7e5846ce&display=&preview=1&row=100
Again sorry for the lengthy post but thanks SO MUCH for your experienced opinions!
It will make such a difference, I want to make sure everything goes right. Thank you!
