Newf puppy characteristics at 12 wks?

Hi, I am thinking about rescuing a Newf/Lab mix puppy and so have been doing a lot of research and lurking to learn about the breed. This is my first time posting.

What I am wondering is what does a typical Newf puppy weigh, look like, etc., at 12 wks? I really wanted to rescue a Newf, preferably an older one, but this puppy is the closest thing to a Newf in my area. Most rescues don't adopt out of area. When I get a Newf "for real," to show and get really involved in the breed, I'd like to get a well-bred puppy, but since right now I am just looking for a loving companion I thought it would be much better to rescue and save some poor dog's life.

I would appreciate any input you have. This puppy is about 30 lbs. or so and could gain some weight, he is maybe 12 or so in. at the withers and has a fluffy stand-off puppy coat. He's all black with just a tuft of white at the chest. Big tight paws, like a cat's, but I can't tell if they're webbed or not (what's that?). He has some feathering like a husky or shepherd maybe, but not typical Newfie legs (as far as I can tell). He has a good blocky muzzle, tighter flews (can you tell on a puppy?). But his stop isn't that sharp, more slopy... he does have the Newfie "tuft" on the forehead. He has black gums and some black spots on his tongue-- do Newfs have that?

Here is his pic & bio-- it says Lab/Chow but they think now Newf/Lab: http://web1.petfinder.org/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=812758&adTarget=468dogbaby&SessionID=3ce74ece7e5846ce&display=&preview=1&row=100

Again sorry for the lengthy post but thanks SO MUCH for your experienced opinions!
It will make such a difference, I want to make sure everything goes right. Thank you!

He looks very much like a newf to me. Don't judge by his lips. Newfs flews vary in dept from newf to newf. I have one girl that hardly has any droop at all to her lips and she is a pure bred. Actually be thankful if he does not develope deep flews because he will slobber less. yes the flews will grow as he ages. Web feet are easy to see. Spread his toes apart to see is they are connected by a webbing sorta like a duck. the webbing will be from the base of the toe to the knuckle. If he is a mix he may or may not have web feet. Newfs do get black spots on their tongues.
Again, he looks newf to me

I just came back from the photo section. If you look there is a photo of a 12 week old newf that was just posted yesterday. Look at the one titled "New pup Koko Bear"

Jggrosch--

Thank you so much for replying to all of my questions! I really appreciate your time and responding to my concerns. I also got in touch with a member of the SoCal Newf Club and got to speak with her at length. Hopefully this puppy will be Newf or at least Newf-mix, because he's the only Newf-type around for hundreds of miles!

Hi and Welcome! Went to the website and I agree with Jeannie, he sure looks like a Newfie. He's so adorable with that "take me home" look
Let us know what you decide.

Hi there i would be very wary,
this does look like a newf mix, but i have seen my share of chow lab mixes that as pups look sooo much like a newf, than they change as they mature, if in fact this is a chow mix be very wary, i will not groom chow lab mixes anymore, becouse of aggresion.
chows are known to have eye vision problems thus leading to bite first reactions, they are not a very good breed to have as a first time dog owner.
your best bet is to get a newf from newf rescue, put your word out, please try that first.
we had 2 chow lab mixes that mauled a child here in town a year ago, it was a very sad thing, and that is not the first incidant with a chow lab mix.
it does not apear to me to be newf yet and is to young to decide, it looks older than 12 weeks also to me.
if it is in fact part chow..
normally the tongue is all black
if the tongue is all black
i would not get this pup.

Well.... I think it definitely looks like a newfie... perhaps not a "well-bred" one, but it does look like it has some "Newf" in it.

Hi, I am not a first time dog owner, actually I have been in 4-H and grew up with dogs and currently have a min. Eskie I am thinking of showing in agility or maybe obedience.

I definitely do not want a chow! As a child my family had one and it is just not my breed.

His tongue is not all black like a chow's tongue, I checked that out. It just has some spots on it like Dalmatian spots or something. I had a Lab mix (sweetest temperament) I rescued from the pound that was my 4-H dog that had 3 black spots on her tongue. Maybe a birthmark?

At what age do Newf characteristics become apparent?

If you hear of any Newf rescues that could be transported to SoCal (I would be willing to pay) please let me know!

Thanks!

Caroline

P.S. Sarnewfie as a breeder what do you think of this puppy judging by his appearance and the details I provided in my original post? Including his weight and height? He still has all his puppy teeth.

i am having trouble reading your original post, it is way to wide for my screen, i have a tiny screen on my puter, so scrolling back and forth i loose my place where i am reading a lot.
if you like, please email me ok?
it will be much easier for me to get all the questions you are asking, as annie stated i believe this to be part newf.
i know several newf lab mixes that are fantastic dogs,
if the tongue is not all black, i have seen the lab chow mixes, and every one of them had the all black tongue, than i think it is safe to assume that there is no chow.
newfs are known to have black spots on their tongues.
that is normal.

Hi all,

Thank you all so much for being so helpful and friendly and answering my questions! It's made such a difference.

I feel very reassured about his tongue, thanks sarnewfie. What's funny is the shelters here in LA have three categories for big dogs: shepherd mix, chow mix, and pit bull mix. They are absolutely ridiculous about identifying dog breeds!

I am going to meet a member of the Newf club here and her dogs! I can't wait. Hopefully she'll be able to take a look at him to and lay to rest the question of his parentage.

Meanwhile I am keeping my eyes open... I'm practically stalking the pound!
