We weaned Little Bear to Nutro (lamb/rice) over a period of 1 wk. Here's the scoop: On day 3, he began having loose stools. We backed off a little. On day 4, he woke up at 4am and had an EXPLOSIVE stool. UGH! Day 5, muddy. Day 6, normal stools resume. Day 7, normal but strange color.

We've been adding acidophilous supplements to his food to help restore healthy intestinal flora.

Here's my question (and forgive if it reflects horrible ignorance on my part) - but can I expect that appearance of stool will ever be 'normal' again?

AND...he has started ferreting out kitty-crunchies in the yard. This is a new thing. Is he 'missing' something?

If you mean by "strange color" sort of yellowish, Moya's are the same (she is on the same food plus some yogurt and wet food). Sometimes they are slightly mushy but most of the time fairly firm. I can always tell when she has eaten some crayons...Neon doggie doo! :D

I am not a fan of Nutro.
all my customers that have tried it, have complained of many things including bad skin.
i would maybe try a different foodthat is chicken based or beef based.
good luck

I have never tried nutro, We use a combo of wellness and Kirkland (AKA costco) I did notice that when we moved Boagie and Baby to the Chicken mixture the poop texture improved.
Ohh, and i have also wondered about our dogs choice of suppliments. Only the husband calls them almond roccha due the added kitty litter.

LOL...CONFUCIOUS SAY: PUP WHO EAT CRAYONS DOWNLOAD IN TECHNICOLOR.

Yeah...his stool is yellowish (with some green). Now, I know what that would mean in an exclusively breastfed baby...but a dog? LOL

Hi I had Jake on Nutro when I first got him and also had a problem with loose stools, I have since switched to Wellness Super 5 mix and all is well LOL.

Breeder said her dogs had loose stools with Nutro but we have not had that problem. I wonder if it doesn't have anything to do with the water in different areas. I have heard that a change in water can give a dog the runs.

Sorry to have to add to the negative answers, but I had mine on Nutro too and found out through researching GOOD dog foods that it's crap. Took them off of it and had them on Wellness. Absolutely perfect food both in protein and fat for growing and adult newfs. Human grade ingredients and baked.
