New Baby!

My best friend and his wife are pregnant and I'm very excited!

So, parents out there, what kind of things helped you through the first few months of baby's life that you didn't think about before you had the baby? I want to get them really useful presents (aside from offering my time as babysitter) and I wonder if there's any advice from you all that I can pass on to them? They're pretty nervous, even though they've been planning for this baby.

Swaddle the baby. Get or make swaddling blankets (although a regular blanket will do) and instructions on how to do it. Babies want to feel snug like they were in the womb.

I also liked the stuffed animal you can put in the crib that makes a soothing noise.

Dang, it's been so long that I kind of forgot!

Congrats to them!

Hello from California, Congrats! I have three kids, all doing well. Don't bother with any fancy clothes, the onesies or the short ones that snap at the bottom are best, then just swaddle for the first month. Keep the babies head warm with a hat and if you have trouble with him scratching his face cause it's hard to cut his fingernails, put on little baby sock on his hands. sleep when the baby sleeps and good luck! wonderful time, but exhausting. A battery powered swing and Rod Stewart! saved my life with a very colic-y baby as a first time mom.
Go with Disposable diapers! Pampers are best IMO
I tried the other brand. The baby was in her car seat and When I took her out, poop all up her back into her hair and all over the car seat. Had to take it all apart to wash after I bathed her lol.
I LOVED my car seat snugly! (pretty much a sleeping bag made for a car seat) It was much better than bundling a baby up in that tight car seat.

baby wipe warmers are nice too.

Do you guys have any opinions on the whole disposable vs reusable diapers?
There are many, many websites devoted to this discussion!

Congratulations to your friends. The things I found most useful in the newborn stage were swaddling blankets (they make them now with velcro but ours were just stretchy fabric), a sling/carrier to keep baby close and make nursing easier/more discreet, and a little grown-up company now and then. Also support for your friend's choices, whether she decides to nurse or not, cosleep or not, etc...I really appreciated friends who were supportive of our choices even if they were different from their own.

There is nothing like the Norwegians for being pratical, The first time I saw a Voksi thought it was the best since sliced bread... A Voksi is a baby bag, in the old days was made of sheep skin.. today you can either order a sheep skin or new kind of fabrics. It is such a pain to bundle the baby for the trip.. get into a warm place, unbudel the baby, then bundle up again.. not good for the baby either plus waking the baby is bad news for tired Moms. What's great about the Voksi is you don't have to put on extra clothing like sweaters or baby jackets.. just pop the baby into the voksi (LOL) put on a hat and off you go.. this depends on where you live of course.. u might want to use a sweater under.. If you go someplace where it's warm then just undo the Voksi.. here is the website.. there not cheep but hey worth every penny... www.voksi.com

How to use... http://www.voksi.com/view_video.php?id=16

I second all of this! I used to swaddle my daughter so tight I was afraid I'd cut off her circulation but she loved it! We also had the Mama Bear that did the baby heartbeat sound-I can remember frantically ripping batteries out of the remote controls at 2am when her batteries died.

We also had a vibrating baby chair that was a Godsend. It was the only thing she slept in for naps until she was 3 months old, and the dishwasher had to be running. I had the cleanest darn dishes.

One of the most helpful things was friends brought dinners that I could stick in the freezer and then slowly cook in the crock pot. Ashton ate every hour, and it took her 45 minutes to drink 3 ounces. So the last thing I wanted to do with those 15 minutes was cook. I had to wake her up to eat at night and it was worse. Having easy stuff around to cook and or eat was a life saver.
