Anyone know anything about serotonin levels for big dogs and issue of aggressive behaviors because of it?????? A friends male pyr is having some bad issues with fear aggressive outbursts , they are unpredictable and getting more frequent. She has tried behavior modification and other things to no avail. We were discussing serotonin levels and canine behavior but dont have alot to go on there may be a serotonin connection. Any help would be appreciated.Having had a pyr with fear rage syndrome, frontal lobe seizures I am hoping this is not another case. Jasper is a byb pyr she rescued 3 yrs ago.:(

"K9agression.com states that, “Research has also indicated that the SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) drugs improve the aggression problem in combination with behavior modification.”

Copied from Marina's article

I have no idea of the correct levels.......i leave that to the vets, But I have two dogs referred to me for training whilst on these drugs.......we are doing some behaviour adjustment training for these dogs. If you are interested and send me your e-mail I can send you a great book on this, I just cannot post it here so that you can read it.

The boxer I am dealing with is not as succesful as the Rhodesian Ridgeback....he has improved almost instantly

There has been theories that increasing taurine and tryptophan and some other amino acids in the diet increases seratonin levels and helps "level" out a dog's mood. I have also read that avoiding grain in the diet is also beneficial to avoid mood swings related to sugar spikes. There is not alot of information available, however, I suggest you google "aggression, taurine and tryptophan" and you may also be interested to read what Dr. Karen Becker has to say about the relationship between diet and dog behaviour:
