Adam is finally of age!! His first show will be Sept 6th & 7th. How do I know what time he will show that day? It is a 2 1/2 hour drive and I would hate to get up very early, drive there and wait forever. In the working group here is the line up

WORKING BREEDS
9 AKITA 4-5- 0-0
5 ALAS MAL 0-4- 1-0
3 BERNS MTN 2-1- 0-0
20 BOXER 8-10- 1-1
4 BULLMASTIFF 1-2- 1-0
30 DOBERMAN 10-14- 2-4
2 GIANT SCHN 0-2- 0-0
19 GREAT DANE 6-10- 1-2
3 GRT PYRENEES 3-0- 0-0
1 GRT SWISS MTN 0-0- 1-0
8 MASTIFF 3-3- 2-0
8 NEWF 3-3- 1-1
2 PORT WATERDOG 0-0- 2-0
11 ROTTWEILER 6-3- 2-0
4 SAMOYED 2-1- 1-0
8 SIB HUSKY 2-4- 1-1
1 STD SCHN 0-1- 0-0

Can anyone make an educated guess? What do the numbers behind the breed mean? (3-3- 1-1) What do I do when I get there? check in? Where? This showsite has no electric, how do I poof Adam up?
If this were a horse show I would know everything, but I have to start somewhere. HELP Since Adam is only 6 months, I know this is only for fun and getting Adam (and me)use to the shows. I am a nervous wreck

Hi Jeannie,
Great news! Hard to believe Adam is old enough already!
The superintendent will send you a judging program- usually a week before the show. That will have the ring number and approximate time Newfs will be shown.
It may say something like:
Ring 6
Judge: Joe Schmoe
8:00
16 Bernese Mountain Dogs 8-6-(1-1)
24 Saint Bernards 12-12 (0-0)
14 Giant Schnauzers 10-4 (0-0)
10:00
2 Alaskan Malamute 1-1-(0-0)
15 siberian Huskies 8-7 (0-0)
8 Newfoundlands 3-3-(1-1)
That means that the 8 entered Newfs will be shown in ring 6 after the judge is finished with the 2 Mals and 15 Sibes. Most people figure 24 dogs per hour so the Newfs should be ready for showing about 10:30-10:45.
The info 3-3-(1-1) means there are 3 class dogs, 3 class bitches, (1 specials dog and 1 specials bitch).
When you get there, set up your stuff, attend to Adam, get him ready. Around 10:00 (given the example above), go to ring 6 and tell the steward "Newfoundland number x" (the exact armband number will be in the paperwork you get from the superintendent and is often your admission ticket to the show if the show charges non-entered people an admission fee). The steward will then give you the correct armband # (but check it to make sure it is the right number). There will be rubber bands somewhere there (often hanging on the baby gates). Take a rubber band too. Now go back and finish getting Adam ready for the ring. Pay attention to what is happening in the ring as things often move faster due to absent entries, a speedy judge, etc. It is your responsibility to be ringside when your breed is called into the ring. No one will come looking for you. Get there early, too, to watch what the procedure the judge is using. He has to use the same pattern/procedure for each dog in a particular breed and he will often use the same pattern for all breeds. Knowing where he will want you to stand, whether you will be doing triangles or down and backs can help you prepare yourself. The steward will give you direction, too, when it is your turn to enter the ring.
No electricity? Lots of show sites do not have electricity available. You have him all bathed and groomed at home and then do a regroom by poofing him up with the pin brush at the show site (or you buy a generator so you have your own electric supply- but check the premium list to see what is said about generators- some clubs have definite rules & regs regarding them and their use). Bibs are great for keeping the drool off the chest.
Have fun and good luck!!

Jeannie,
If you don't want to wait for the mailman, go to the Superintendent's website & find the club listing (may be under "closed shows"). Click on the name of the club. Then, there should be a "judging program" listed with a link (often in pdf requiring Adobe). Open that link and on the first page or two there will be a list of breeds and ring numbers. Find Newfs and the ring number, then go further into the judging program to that ring number and find Newfs again under the ring number. Newfs will be listed under a time- probably with other breeds before or after as in the example I gave earlier.
Again, Have Fun!!

Jeannie,

Judging programs usually arrive via mail to you the Friday or Saturday of the week before your show.

For your particular show, I would say that I would have Adam ringside, ready to go at 9:50 on Saturday and at 10:00 on Sunday.

Having intimate knowledge of your show site (I was on the show committee the past few years!)you can use gas powered generators anywhere on the site, even under the one grooming tent that will be provided. I would not count on getting to the site on Saturday morning and finding space in the tent. The site is open for exhibitors after 3:00 Friday afternoon and people will start setting up at that time. There is parking in a lot and you can groom there but bring your own shade as there are no trees in the parking lot.

Good luck, enjoy, and let Adam enjoy!!

Thanks Susan,

I will remember to take some shade. I have a generator, but with only a puppy I will fore go that at this time. Like I said it is mostly for fun and training right now.

So this will be the first official show for you and Adam! How exciting! Emmy and I showed in our first just this past April. So, I can relate to the butterflies, excitement and anticipation. You've gotten great advice from some very experienced people. I know it seems like a lot of details to remember, but soon the details will become routine. I know you'll both do just fine. Relax, have fun with Adam and have a great show! Good luck to you both, and be sure to give us a full report. :D

Jeannie,
Good Luck to you and Adam. I can remember Pepe's first show in April/2002 as a puppy. It was very exciting and loads of fun because we knew that we were only there to get some ringside experience, used to being judged, used to running the ring, etc. I enjoyed those days much more than I have been doing now because we are trying to finish Pepe's championship and the shows are much more nerve racking when you are trying to get your last few points.
By the way what show are you going to? We are going to be in Indiana, Pa. on Sunday Sept 7th &
Cortland, Oh on Sunday Sept 21st.

I will be at Clermont County Sept 6 & 7. That is near Cincinnati. Then the next weekend I will be in Lebanon IN--on the NW side of Indianapolis. Not sure where I will go after that. I am not traveling long distances because this is only to get Adam and me experience. I may show a few more time this year, but then wait until he is more mature to show. He will be one Feb 15th, so we will see...
