Myra strikes again. (warning, gross pics)

End of the week, heading into a nice do-nothing 3 day Holiday weekend. All seems normal, we get home, get greeted by the pups and feed them. Take Myra outside to do her business and as she walks up the 2 steps to the house I notice blood. Scream for Vin to get flash light and here is what we see

We both look at each other and are dumbfounded, I can't believe how deep the hole is. I think recluse spider cause it eats away the flesh and I didn't like the black around the hole, Vin thinks Bot Fly larva, as if something burst out of her. We push out stuff, which to me was seedy, making me even more nervous, then pack it with bacitracin and call the vet. About an hour

passes by and we looked again and it now looks like this. First thing Sat morning the vet calls and says he'll come by around noon. His first guess on the phone was a ruptured anal gland. I say no, this to far from her butt. But he was correct, we guess her gland got clogged and it blew out the top of her leg, just on the right side by the base of her tail.

This special girl teaches me things I don't want to know! The vet flushed the wound and put her on antibiotics & pain killers. Now that I think back, she seemed uncomfortable for about 2 nights but I chalked it off to fire works. I have heard of anal gland issues with smaller dogs and with Zeke's having to be expressed a few times, I've smelled that awful smell but I was standing not even 2 feet from her and even picked up her poop and didn't see or smell anything. Just shocking! Anyone ever have a newf with this issue? By the way, her poops are always perfect, she's probably only ever had puddin poo maybe 3 times in her life.

wow I am really surprised you didn't smell anything. My little Ginger has a problem with her anal glands she is on pumpkin with her dinner now and forever. She did have her goes too but you could tell it was an anal gland not up high like Myra.

I hope the meds make your girl feel better soon and Myra heals quickly.

Oh dear! Poor thing! That had to be painful for her. I've never heard of anal glands rupturing before, but have heard of anal fissures. Is this similar or the same? Will there be long term problems? Am sending healing wishes in hopes that it will heal with no further trouble.

She is certainly on the mend and I'm sure it hurt her but she seems happy the last few days, enough to start jumping on Zeke. I assume the gland will heal and I will keep a close eye on her but I was speaking with Vin about her bathroom habits. When she squats for pee, it's similar when she poo's maybe, she's not straining to push. (which should empty some fluid into her poo) In the conversation with the vet, he made mention about it possibly having to do with her hypothyriodism and I was reading that it could be something to do with her spine, which she does have an issue there. It was last year in Mar/Apr where she couldn't walk and I've had her on pred since then. I've tried to take her off but I don't think it's possible. I'll be talking to the vet again (1 week out, he wanted to hear from us) I'll do some more research but the spine issue is possible.

To answer your question Jane, no it's not the same. The anal glands are at 4 o'clock & 8 o'clock on the inside of the anus, I assume with the newfs they are bigger cause it ruptured away from her anus and almost in the top of her thigh at the base of her tail, an anal fissure is a tear of the anus or at least that's what I read.

Thanks Dawn. I am still shocked at how it ruptured, but now have a better idea of where it's situated. And, I'm so glad it's healing now! I feel so sorry for her, but glad she is feeling friskier. Keep us up to date.
