...started whelping on Monday and ended up in emergency surgery for a ruptured uterus. We lost several pups and came far too close to losing Addy.
Obviously, this is a breeder's nightmare. We are so fortunate that Addy continues to improve daily and we have 4 healthy pups. Addy's breeder drove here from Wisconsin with Addy's sister who recently had pups and had just begun weaning them. Gretta has stepped right in and has been nursing and mothering her nieces and nephews while Addy is recuperating. My heart is warmed by all the support friends have given.
Addy with her first pup before things went south:
The vets gave Addy almost no chance of surviving. You can imagine my state of mind during this tragedy.
This shows my reaction to seeing Addy alive and somewhat responsive the next day:
This is Gretta nursing 'her' pups:
Thursday, the vets reluctantly allowed me to bring her home. I felt she'd do better here. After several days of refusing to eat and unending drainage from her incision, she finally turned the corner. This is Addy today. She is soooo much better and I'm incredibly thankful to still have my very special girl:
