My Sweet Addy...

...started whelping on Monday and ended up in emergency surgery for a ruptured uterus. We lost several pups and came far too close to losing Addy.
Obviously, this is a breeder's nightmare. We are so fortunate that Addy continues to improve daily and we have 4 healthy pups. Addy's breeder drove here from Wisconsin with Addy's sister who recently had pups and had just begun weaning them. Gretta has stepped right in and has been nursing and mothering her nieces and nephews while Addy is recuperating. My heart is warmed by all the support friends have given.

Addy with her first pup before things went south:

The vets gave Addy almost no chance of surviving. You can imagine my state of mind during this tragedy.
This shows my reaction to seeing Addy alive and somewhat responsive the next day:

This is Gretta nursing 'her' pups:

Thursday, the vets reluctantly allowed me to bring her home. I felt she'd do better here. After several days of refusing to eat and unending drainage from her incision, she finally turned the corner. This is Addy today. She is soooo much better and I'm incredibly thankful to still have my very special girl:

Oh my goodness! What a fright for you and your family. Very sorry for the loss of the pups:( Thankful your special girl is rallying. What a great breeder to drive down from WI......with a "wet nurse". Continued prayers from Cincinnati. Kim

I'm so happy Addy is doing better. I know that must have been the scariest thing to go through. God bless Gretta for standing in as "Mom."

OH God Ginny I am SO sorry!! I must admit I've been checking your site for updates of the babies. I'm very sorry of the pups you've lost. So very sad. I'm glad Addy and remaining pups are doing well. Gretta rocks!! So glad she was able to fill in.

We will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers. It's onwards and upwards from here and certainly mom and babes will do well from here on out.

You are blessed to have Gretta step in as a wet-nurse for the pups. I hope you have smooth sailing from here on!

Just seeing this now. How frightening!!!!! I am so sorry about the complications and the loss of those little babies..but so thankful Addy is home recovering. It amazes me how another dog can step in and "mother" the pups. I'm sure they will thrive.

What a frightening experience. I am so sorry for the loss of your pups but warmed by Addy's recovery and all the love you, her breeder and her sister have shown her!

It is stories like this that I want to pull out when people ask me 'why I don't just breed' since I have 2 Newfs...
