Marks on tongue

Unless Im' not very observant of other breeds... I've noticed that some Newfs have dark marks on their tongues. Is this a Newfie characteristic?

Some have it, some don't. Uwe has several spots on his tongue, but others from his litter don't have any.

I've heard it has something to do with the Landseer recessive gene...whether or not that is the case, I'm not sure.

It's funny because our first Newf wasn't born with a mark but when she got a little bit older she had one. At first I thought she had a small leaf in her mouth and then when it wouldn't come out I thought maybe she had eaten a pen  I've noticed from the pictures of other newfs on NN that some have them on theirs.

They're deposits of pigment. Like freckles or birthmarks on people. Many breeds have this. Goldens and Labs do too. (I've heard that ~30 different dog breeds have dark spots on their tongues.) They don't have any Landseer recessive genes, I don't think!!

And...no it doesn't mean they're "mixed" with Chow or Shar Pei which are the two breeds with black tongues.

So...it's normal. Don' worry!!

Heather....is that YOU??? It has to be you. If so, WELCOME!!! It's about time you got here.

Mira sends kisses to her Aunt Heather!!

It's ME Donna! I just knew you'd pick up on that. I have been reading for some time now and have gotten totally hooked on NN. You were right when you told me I would love it and I do. I'm always keeping tabs on your comments

Byron is landseer recessive and our breeder said that the spot on the tongue is a tic, just like the black spots on landseer's legs.

Does anybody have a newf who is not landseer recessive and still has a black spot?

i have spots on tongues, in fact my grey had spots, so did my pure for black sampson, some theorize it has to do with the spotted gene, not landseer, who knows, all i know is i think it is funny when people think they are related to chows becouse of that ;)

Grayce has black marks all over her tongue, which I had never seen before on a Newf. I don't know if her parents had black spots but neither were Landseers. Just another wonderful thing about her!

When we first started looking into Newfs, we went to a show in Ft. Worth, & a few of the dogs we saw had spots. The owners said the same as everyone else here has said, some have them, some don't. Penny doesn't have any. My flat coated retreiver has spots though.

A rat terrier is the only dog I have ever owned that didn't have any black spots. Oh, and a boxer. Every black dog has had spots no matter what the breed. Also, Moonlight has spots and she's gray. BTW I had a black Newf from black parents that had an inverted heart on the tip of her tongue.

I am sooo glad you posted this question today. I noticed some black on Tink's tongue last night, she is mixed with flat coated retriever and I was kind of worried something was wrong. Thought maybe she ate a pen or was coming down with some strange disease, I have never noticed it before, she is now 6 months old.
