Life After Snuffles

Sorry to read newf.net is closing, but surprised it lasted this long. Sure glad it is still here today. I guess photobucket has deleted a lot of my pictures, but I forgot many were uploaded here, so getting some put on my Smartphone. Only had a smartphone for a bit less than 2 years.

As old timers know, I adopted Snuffles from my neighbor a bit over 2, but knew him since he was 8 to 10 weeks old. He went to the Bridge March 1, 2016, a day and a month shy of his 12th birthday. Snuffles was my first and so far only dog. Newf.net was a great support network for someone who had no dog experience let alone large breed. Met several folks from here in real life and found out Snuffles had kinfolk as I called them from the same breeder 50 miles away, so we visited regularly and dog sat too. That family since moved to FL.

I have remained dogless since Snuffles went to the bridge, though have had a chance at 2 rescues, since the rescue coordinator for River King Newf Club is a local area personal friend. She ended up adopting the first one offered, so I see him regularly and he is a total sweetheart. I was also offered a cousin of Snuffles that had to be rehomed from FL. On my and the River King rescue coordinator, he ended up living with a gay couple in Chicago who took in a very special needs newf from River King that thrived till he had a spleen blow out and died quickly unexpected. I see pictures on Facebook and he looks very happy in a upscale apartment with a balcony he loves to lay out on when it is cold. A newf with a penthouse apartment as I say.

As many know, I lived with my then 92 year old mother, who was having health issues. It was a wonder she never fell on Snuffles or stepped on him trying to get around him. I also knew when "Grandma" saw Snuffles at the Rainbow Bridge, I would most likely relocate since I do not need or want a big house and yard. I do not want to try to move with a dog, because I would be horrified if I had to rehome a pet. "Grandma" is now in a assisted living home almost 2 years at 95. Physically she is fair but needs a walker, but the memory is shot. It is just a matter of time.

I often referred to "Aunt Ellen" in the past. Snuffles LOVED her. She and her husband kept him for me when I slipped on the ice and tore up my knee almost 6 weeks. "Uncle Ron" has since passed, and Ellen about 2 years ago moved to Galveston, TX to be close to her son, DIL and grand babies and the beach. We have also done 3 trips together, and hope to be free to do more. Who knows, I may end up in TX, but doubt it. Since Snuffles, I am not a warm weather kind of guy.

I have dog sat several dogs since Snuffles passed, some were friends of his. And since we do not have a fenced yard, dogs have to be walked. I sure don't miss falling asleep, waking up after midnight and walking a my guest dog in the rain or extreme cold. I sure don't miss the Vet bills either.

I use to type about my friends' "Pesky Little Varmints" aka Bassett Hounds. All but Tank and Pippa are at the Bridge now. Tank's Mom went in early December. There is a son of Pippa's now...and he is as Pesky as the others. :)

Well that is about it. "Aunt Ellen" was up here in freezing central Illinois back in early December. I had to let my friends' Newfs out. Here is a picture of Ellen and Thor, the sweet fellow offered to me in early 2017. He did visit Mom at the assisted living place back in September. A lot of the staff got their picture taken with him.

Leonard! So good to here from you! It's been way too long and so much has happened. I now have a new dog, even though I swore I wouldn't unless one dropped in my lap. And of course, one did. LOL

Frank, a devilishly handsome Landseer, came to me as a breeder rehome at 7 years old. He's almost 9 now. Birthday is Feb 3rd. He has become the biggest blessing in my life. I was diagnosed with rectal cancer last Feb. Went through treatment and surgery and I have very good odds of beating this, but if it wasn't for Frank, who is the best medicine, I'm not sure I would care. We bonded instantly and he hasn't left my side since. And I'm not going to leave his side if I have anything to say about it.

I wish I could post pictures, but I dumped Photobucket. Still everyone is invited to find me on FB (Jane Kasten). I don't post much, but I do have some pics of Frank on there.

I'm so glad that you shared your updates with us. It's remarkable that your Mom is 95, though I'm sure it's distressing to cope with her memory loss. I hope that, on occasion, a big, black furry memory creeps in her mind and gives her reason to smile secretly to herself. I know how much she loved Snuffles.

And Aunt Ellen and those pesky little varmints...Oh my goodness. I used to love all the stories of Snuffles and his friends. He was such a lucky dog to have you and I'm sure his life was lived to the fullest degree.

Thanks so much for dropping in here. We all miss the good old NN days, so it's especially good to hear from our favorite old timers. Best wishes for 2020 and beyond.

It's so lovely to hear from you. Glad things are well and you get a least a newfie fix when needed. Sorry about your mom, but life is these days. And Jane I'm sorry I didn't realize what you were dealing with, so very glad you got your Frank! Newfs, they make everything ok, or at least seem ok. Miss mine very much, today is one year since Zeke passed :(

Hi, Leonard! Good to hear from you!
I’m sorry your mom is having difficulties. It’s good your friend has a Newf so you get to hang out with one.
My Dublin is almost 10. Showing his age a bit, but doing pretty well.
Hope 2020 is a good year for you. Mary
