The crypto (Serology for Infectious Diseases) came back negative.

The Thyroid panel came back low sort of across the board, so that's a positive for hypothyroidism. The vet that I spoke to (not Dr. Glass) was a little surprised when I said, "Oh! That's good news!" Hah! At least I've got something to FIGHT now, something I can do, that will maybe slow down the progression of the LarPar.

She couldn't find the results of the Myasthenia Gravis test in his notes, but she said she might have just been looking in the wrong place. She took a note for Dr. Glass to call me to address the Thyroid and the M.G. test - hopefully he'll get back to me today so we can start medication for the thyroid.

It's weird to say "Good news, his thyroid is low", but it is!!
Glad to hear there is something to fight.
Patiently (Not really) :) ...waiting for the other results.

Ooh Ooh! Have to say - I love my vet.

Dr. Glass just called me back. He embroidered upon the Thyroid results, saying the T4 and free T4 levels both came back very low - certainly low enough for him to treat.

He cautioned me against false hope, saying that he doesn't think it will CURE the LarPar, but when I said, "yes, I'd read that although other neuropathies associated with hypothyroid respond to treatment, LarPar doesn't..." he responded with, "Well, that's published, certainly, but it isn't necessarily what we see, clinically" and basically said that there IS a chance that it will improve his symptoms, or at the very least maybe help prevent them from worsening.

I asked if treating the hypothyroid would help prevent megaesophagus, and he said that unfortunately that isn't clear.

And although all of that is lovely, it's not why I said I love my vet! He actually jogs by my house every day, and he said on Sunday since he hadn't reached me on the phone, he considered stopping just to give me the news and let me know that he'd dispensed the medication to the pharmacy, in case I wanted to begin treatment immediately. He finally opted against it, because he was a horrible sweaty mess and he knew he'd speak to me the following day - but still! How many vets do you know would consider swinging by your house to deliver news since they hadn't been able to get you on the phone???

Anyway.

Myasthenia Gravis test results won't be in until Thursday. I'm off to the vet to pick up Pooka's medication!

Headed to my vet this afternoon. Always good to have this sort of information handy just to ask "should I be worried".

And yes, he sounds like a great vet!

Yep, your vet is right. Once Emmy got her myositis diagnosis, and we started treatment, her LP improved. Not gone completely, but improved enough that her bark has returned to normal, not overheating as quickly as before and breathing in general is much improved. So fingers crossed that Pooka has similar results. Woohooo!

Marcus's T-3 came back quite low and his T-4 and free T-4 were just below borderline normal. He started thyroid meds two weeks ago.
Nessa...Marcus had blood drawn for the crypto this morning.

Good news hope the meds are helpful for both boys!!! Not sure what they're on but I get Bella's soloxine from Kv Vet supply. I get 1000 pills at a time and it's WAY cheaper than at my vets office.

Katie - yup Pooka was prescribed Soloxine. We were given 100 pills, with another five refills on the prescription. Think it was a bit over $20 for the 100 - worth going to KV vet instead?

Marcus is on Thyroxizine...I am going to check Kv Vet supply...thanks. Cost was $43 for 2 month supply...wonder why he wasn't prescribed Soloxine...oh this vet is going to be totally annoyed when I question him again.

The other name on Pooka's prescription reads "levothyroxine" Linda, if that helps...

It literally reads Soloxine (Levothyroxine) .8 mg tablets

Levothyroxine is what Jack (dh) takes since his thyroid was removed. It is dirt cheap even at the human pharmacy, but not as cheap as Nessa got it at her vet. The price if you don't have human health insurance at the pharmacy is around $25 for 100

Sydney is on Levo-Tabs .5 mg (one whole pill in am, 1/2 pill pm) which is Levothyroxine. We got 120 pills for $45.75. I got a script to try to find them cheaper, but I can't find the name brand Levo-Tabs. Soloxine seems to be the same thing, I was just worried because someone had told me to watch when changing brands of thyroid meds, some work differently that others. I can't see how if it's the exact same stuff. I asked the vet and he said that is sometimes true, but usually only for cats. I think I might order some online and try them.

One thing Nessa, you may not want to buy too many just yet. Usually there's some tweaking of the dosage in the beginning of treatment.
