Keep Paws Crossed Please

Silly Jilly's ultrasound showed at least 5 pups. :new_smilie_colors1: I'm a bit nervous because she resorbed her last litter. Please keep EVERYTHING crossed that all goes well and we have some beautifully healthy pups at the end of the month.

Good luck Ginny....are you checking her progesterone levels?

LA
Not since the breedings...I'm not a fan of boosting progesterone levels if they drop. I've read and know of a few pups that ended up with male and female sex organs after supplementation. At the end of the pregnancy I've no problem with it, but from what I've read, at this stage, it's too risky.

She had already resorbed by this time last time, so I hope we're in the clear.

Why does one do that when puppies are due in a month? I thought they tested to see when it was time to breed, no? Just interested in learning new things!
Some bitches can't maintain a pregnancy because the progesterone drops. We do the level prior to breeding to indicate fertility, but bitches who have lost litters can have levels monitored and supplemented if needed. For me, it's just a bit too invasive... I worry not only about the impact on the developing fetuses ie. hermaphrodites, but also on the future reproductive health of the pups. I don't think there's been a whole lot of research on the latter.

FYI, what you and everyone should know as a breeder..... IF a girl/Jill absorbed/aborted her last litter, then you need to be testing her progesterone as this pregnancy goes forward throughout the 63 days gestation. Then you will know if she does indeed drop progestrone level prematurely causing her to abort. (Has nothing to do with intending to supplement) Progesterone should/could have been done post her last heat cycle to know more about her maintaining progesterone for future pregnancy potential success.

As far as supplementing progesterone, as with any pregnancy, anything can happen and it should not be done without a great deal of thought and research. However, there are numerous cases of supplementation 'when it was needed' (careful not to supplement when not needed) to maintain pregnancy, producing healthy, normal puppies, who went on to produce healthy puppies for generations. Yes, not a lot of data on it, but noted Repro. Specialists use it regularly.

Good Luck to Jill!

Oh, and edited to add that progesterone testing can be done at the end of a normal pregnancy to better gauge when the delivery will happen. Progesterone drops naturally to induce labor.

Ginny,

Been there done that with a bitch and I'll never do it again. But you really should be checking her progesterone before she reabsorbs another litter.

My bitch was reabsorbing between 4-5 weeks pregnant...I did progesterone tests 2-3 times a week and ultrasounds. I would supplement with progesterone in oil. We finally ended up with one dead puppy via a section and I spayed her on the spot. I also have heard that female puppies from bitches that drop their progesterone are likely to produce the same problem.

I had a bitch who upon ultrasound at 28 days showed 4 to 6 puppies. All seemed normal at that point. At 59 days we xrayed which showed only 2 puppies but they were very faint images and they were clearly being reabsorbed. No heartbeats were detected. Upon spaying her several months later her uterus looked and sounded like a Nestle Crunch Bar as the bones had somewhat calcified but not to the point of detection on xray. That was a first for Hutch! Because we did not test progestrone back then as we can today, I do not know how early she had started reabsorbing, somehwere between 28 and 59 days one would guess.

It won't hurt to keep the progesterone testing ongoing. They can absorb anytime but usually they absorb around the 32-36 day mark. I never have heard of any problems with supplementing when the levels are too low to maintain the pregnancy. Whether you supplement or not, it would be good to know where she is at.
Sending good thoughts that all goes well for your sweet girl.
