Just when you think...

your dog can't surprise you anymore...

In my lifetime of dog ownership, I've never witnessed such an overwhelming, instant display of compassion as I did yesterday.

A little background: My friend G came over to spend the day. She has been having some severe medical issues with her back and is in a lot of pain. While we were sitting on the sofa, her doctor's office girl called to tell her she needed expensive surgery. Her insurance won't cover it...

Understandably, G burst in to tears, sobbing heavily. I felt so sorry for her, but didn't know how to console her other than to utter some feeble condolences.

But Spirit knew exactly what to do. He was lying at her feet facing away from her, but spun around immediately, reached up and literally wrapped both his front legs around her thighs, scooching up so he could firmly press his massive head in her lap. He held her so tightly, knowing that a huge sympathetic hug would help. And it did. She calmed down at his touch.

He held her in this embrace for a good 5 minutes, consoling her in a way that I could not. After watching this display of tenderness in startled amazement for several minutes, I thought to pick up the camera, but only caught the tail end after she had stopped crying and had acknowledged his affection and concern; and he had relaxed his grip. I wish you could have seen him grab and wrap his "arms" around her, hanging on, trying to make her feel safe. It was eerily human. Not like any canine display of emotion that I've ever seen. And he never left her side for the whole long day.

The photos aren't good, but you can definitely see his caring expression...

ARE YOU BETTER NOW?

I PROMISE I WON'T LET GO UNTIL YOU FEEL SAFE AGAIN.

And this, my friends, is why dogs are superior to people.
I am humbled.

Looks like Photobucket is suddenly going to charge you 400.00 per year to share photos, so guess I need to find another way to share them. I've linked them to my Prime account, so you might be able to click on the little icon and see them that way.

Hope I fixed the photo problem. Found a new free photo hosting site...Postimage.org. Super simple to use. Don't need to register or have an account. We'll see how it works.

I am seriously impressed, a speedboat in the living room.
Not too speedy. It's a rubber raft that runs on a trolling motor that I'm modding into a fishing boat. Added a hard floor, swivel seats on DIY milkcrate bases, made an extension cord so I could put the trolling motor battery up front, wired a battery box out of an ammo can, and some other modifications. Can't wait to take it out to the lake.

It's in the living room because I don't like to leave Spirit on his own for long. He has me twisted around his toes.

New photo program worked, and I cried, just from the expression on his face. You have a gem. He is the perfect Newf.

I cried too at your story and pictures. the love and concern on Spirits face is so touching. His act of love and concern is what Christmas is truly all about. :) I will pray your friend finds the funds she needs for her surgery.
