jumping up

Hi all ,
Cru'Ella is very keen on jumping up to greet people.Of course we realise this is not acceptable of a dog that will soon weigh 12 stone ,we make her sit to greet us or our guests , but when shes out playing she tends to run up to people and jump at them.
How can we stop this ? any ideas ?

First of all, you need to come up with a command that you will consistantly use when teaching her not to jump up. Use whatever you are most comfortable with. Personally, I would stay away from using the word "Down" because that is a command that is used separately. For the situation you describe, we use the word "Off".

Ok... once you have your "command", make sure that everyone uses it. When she jumps on someone, have them firmly push her back, and FIRMLY use the word you've chose... for example "OFF"!!!

You might think about setting up a scenario where several you arrange for several of your friends to meet somewhere.... you coach them ahead of time what to do and say. Let her greet them, and make sure they respond by pushing her away, and using the command you've chosen. Doing this consistantly should teach her.

Thank you very much .. why is it that the methods that work best are often simple .. but i never think of them !! lol
For example , when we call Ella she is usually quite good at responding..unless something takes her attention. So we have now what we call our " key" word its "cheese".We say this every time Ella gets a treat for anything , so she now asociates the word "cheese" with getting a cheese treat. If she wont respond to her name being called we use the " key" word .. realising we have a treat upon her return she bound over to us !!
Again .. simple .. but did we think of it ??!! NO !!

Another thing you may try is: When she jumps she is wanting attention. So you pet her and she is getting the attention she wants. (At this point she is training you--she jumps, you pet) Next time she jumps don't pet, don't make eye contact, just make like a tree and stare into space (not at her) When you don't respond with petting (like she has trained you too) she may become confused and sit. When she jumps off you then KNEEL down to her level and pet and praise.

I will try some of thoses idea's , thank you.The problem however , remains when we meet people in the street ! they insist on running over and seeing her , when she see's how happy they are she immediatly wants to jump!

My dogs are not allowed to be approached or petted till they are sitting down. I tell people to wait till I give them the sit command and then they can approach the dogs. If the dogs are very excited, then they get the down command. Over time it works.

Over time it works.
Anne, Zatara jumps up on people too. I have been trying that approach (not petting until he is sitting) and am getting frustrated because he still doesn't behave. It might take a verrry long time at the rate we're progressing.
I am probably being too impatient and will try to keep your words in mind -- I'm glad to know it will work eventually. How long did it take? and how often did you give your newf training opportunities? Sorry for all the questions.

The ignoring thing isn't working for us either. Moya will jump up and also paw when she is excited. I agree...It is frustrating.

They are told to sit and corrected back to sit if they don't stay that way. The visitor/stranger is told to wait till the dog stays at sit and only then pet them. If they don't, they get corrected again. A firm tone is good and consistency.
