NEW: Greetings With a Sit/NO JUMPING: It is easier to begin this practice with your dog on leash greeting family and friends, without jumping or pulling when they approach.
- If your dog pulls or jumps have the greeter turn around – with their back to the dog and if necessary, move away a few steps.
- IMPORTANT NOTE: when you turn your back, do not have any physical contact with your dog. Remember, we don’t want to reinforce the wrong behavior. We are ignoring the jump, with no physical contact with the dog.
- When your dog settles, then have the greeter re-approach, ask your dog to sit, then CLICK! (the instant he sits) letting the greeter treat him while sitting. What we want to teach our dog is: Jumping Up does not lead to attention from people.
- New Dog Rule Is: The only way to get attention is with 4 ON THE FLOOR. All family members must be on the same page with this. Also, you now have a sit and a down to use to cue him what to do instead of jumping. Praise him lavishly when he does sit for these greetings.
- With most dogs, the jumping up” on people is easily corrected and in a very short amount of time. The important key is that no matter who comes in the door, or approaches your dog, every person needs to know (ahead of time) to turn around and not have any physical contact with the dog when he does jump up. You will actually see your dog “think about it” and sit! C/T – Praise!
- Important training factor – do not leash jerk your dog down or away from that person.
