Anybody out there from Vancouver? I have a friend there that may want me to come out there for a job. Nothing definite yet but I am trying to figure out if it is even a possibility. Things I am particularly interested in is what is the school situation (my son is 15). What is the housing and tax situation. What is living there like. Any info appreciated. thanks!

Angela lives near the--I think!! I am sure she will let you know everything you need to know. I hear it is beautiful up there. I'd like to go there. I do know through the winter they rarely get snow and that it is warmer there than here.

The seasons are great, the mosquitos are big, the people are friendly --- but what makes you think we are going to let you leave Virginia?

(Art moves to Vancouver and raises the IQ of both countries --- amazing ...)

It's good to have friends like Frank around to remind you of the obvious things......

Art,
There are private and public schools, the mosquitos are NOT a problem, taxes are GST 7%, PST soon to come down to 6%.
Average house price $450,000 and up, that's for a cheap one!
Winter little snow but the world comes to an end when it happens, enough rain for the Newfs to swim down the streets!!
Summers mild, sometimes hot for a few days.
Cost of living high.
Vancouver is a beautiful city (not quite as good as here!!!)

I've visited there, and it's beautiful! It's probably perfect weather for newfies since it doesn't get that hot!! And there's awesome skiing at Whistler Blackcomb!!

But be warned !!!

British Columbia is Canada's version of California.....

So Vancouver is kinda like a Canadian San Francisco.....

Thanks guys. The links was especially helpful! Angela, it's a relief to hear the mosquitoes aren't too bad. I HATE them and I swell up when I get bitten. We're hoping the housing thing will work out OK. We're in Washington DC now where the house prices are astronomical. We could never buy our house now, but bought in a few years ago before the house prices tripled. (even then it was double what our almost identical house in Pennsylvania cost).

We've seen some gorgeous houses on Vancouver island but finally figured out it would be a three hour commute for Art so that scratched that idea.

So bringing it back to all things newfy :D where can the pups go? Is it like the US or more like England?

Thanks!

There's dog parks, Stanley Park, lots of other parks for dogs and the ocean for swimming (the dogs, not you unless you have a wet suit!!)
No, it's not like England, the scenery is similar to Washington state, mountains, forests etc. And, if you need a quick U.S. fix, the border is just down the road from Vancouver!!!
And...........we talk Canadian EH!!!

OK, what I meant was are dogs allowed in restaurants and on mass transit like they are in England? Where besides dog parks can they go. Are they allowed on all beaches or just some?

Somehow the travel guides forget this all important facet and only mention which ones will let dogs stay. Although the Sutton does have doggie room service
