Incurin Shortage

Our 4 yr old Newf takes Incurin (estrogen) for spay incontinence. We found out today that this medication is back ordered until after the first of the year. The Vet is prescribing an alternate med but the google search that I did this afternoon only brings up several alternatives - DES and Proin. DES is the most similar to Incurin but may not even be available here. Proin is phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride and not the most desirable alternative. It used to be used in human diet drugs and caused strokes. It is supposed to tighten up their sphincter muscle but has side effects that Incurin doesn't.

Is anyone using Proin or an other alternative treatment for spay incontinence?

Chase takes Prion. I have experimented and she only needs 1 tablet a day to keep her dry. The regular dose is 3 per day.

We used Proin for years for our girl Thea. We never had a problem with side effects and she was on a high dosage. It was never a perfect fix though so we experimented with just about every option out there. Eventually we found a natural supplement called Leak No More, (it's on Amazon). It sounds odd, I know. It was a last ditch effort before switching her to the hormonal replacement, (which we really didn't want to do due to some of her other health problems.) The combination of the Proin and Leak No More did the trick for her. Our vet hadn't heard of it before, but has since recommended it to several of his clients to try, especially the ones with giant dogs. He has gotten very favorable reports back. There are no side effects that I know of, but you really need to follow the instructions on the bottle. It's not complicated, but the first couple of days are different until you figure out your maintenance dose. Eventually we were able to drop Thea to once a day, every other day. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Thanks all for your help. I just ordered some "Leaks no More" and if that doesn't work now I am not so worried about her taking the Proin.

We started her on 1 pill of Proin day before yesterday. So far no leaks or negative reactions. I guess we'll have to wait and see if the old meds haven't worn off or if the 1 pill dosage is correct. I have an order of Leak No More on the way. When that arrives the plan is to have her on both and then see if we can stop the Proin after the loading doses are done.

As of today Ziva is on twice a day "Leak no More" drops only. Yeah! No accidents and no prescription medications. Thanks again 5PotatoChips for the suggestion!
