I bought this for my wife for Valentine's Day (I think it scored me a point or two). All you Newfie guys out there, put this on the gift list for your special girl. My wife finished it in two days. Now I have started reading it, what a great book.

Everyone's rave reviews about this book peaked my interest, so I looked it up on amazon.com to read more reviews. All the consumer reviews were very positive, but I was shocked to find the following statement in the editorial review:

"Lerman's attachment to dogs, Newfies in particular, is obvious, which makes it hard to understand why she perpetuates dog breeding, a practice that has been shown to promote deformities and diseases in many breeds. Despite this incongruity, her book will be an excellent reading choice for dog fanciers."

From all that I've heard from the breeders on this forum, good breeders improve the health and form of the breed. I think the reviewer was irresponsible to make that comment.

It really made me steamed and I just had to vent.

Oh, I'm with you, Kirstie. I thought I'd read that wrong.I think it was an ignorant thing to say and it made me mad too. Anne

I also have this book and LOVED it. I have Gentle Giants and it has the most amazing pictures. Funny, sweet pictures. I honestly think I collected every book I could find with the word "newfoundland" in it when I was waiting for Newman to be born!!!

My dh bought me the book for our 7th anniversary last Sunday. I just started reading it yesterday and am almost finished!! It has rekindled and illuminated the love I feel for my newfie. I always thought I was a nut for thinking she was talking to me with her eyes...,but now I know. She's my lovey!
