Identifying backyard breeders!!

Yep, thats how they make the money! No health checks, and no concern for 'just in case' just do it and hope for a lot of puppies! Its irresponsible people like this, who hook up with other BYB's to continue the circle of dogs in shelters and rescues. Not ot mention the next generation looks less and less like a Newfoundland.

Can they afford if a C Section is needed, or the mom doesn't make it? Just last week I had an APB come out on my Obed List (other breed) of someone who did all the right things, and planned everything completely.....except for the lose of her girl..... They were looking for a wet nurse.....

Not really, so I have no idea what will happen. I've known these people for a while. I know whom is driving this, but don't understand how the other is allowing this to happen. It's a mystery to me. I've talked about responsible breeding until I'm Blue in the face. Hasn't done any good. I'm afraid for the dog. While I'm hopeful that everything turns out OK, I know they are not prepared for any type of emergency, (they don't want to have to take her to the Vet, as that would cost money) and then afterwards their using an X-Pen for a whelping box??!!?? I see bad juju here.:uhoh2:

Ugh. So gross.

I was on a "breeder" website yesterday that made my skin crawl - no health testing, pups go at 8 weeks, various other red flags. This definitely needs to be a sticky and required reading for new newf net members!

*Edited to add that this really can be helpful to everyone. It's no secret that Elvis came from a BYB so I know firsthand we all make mistakes, but I can promise it's one we'll never do again.

While I agree this is necessary reading, please keep in mind that many new members already have their pup. 8 years ago I acquired Shiva from the wrong place and I needed information. I found this forum and was so eager to learn, but felt unworthy of interacting with the group due to where my pup came from. At the time I realized my mistake there was no way I was going to give up my pup because she came from a bad place.

You're right - I didn't mean for my comment to come off as directed to new pup owners. It's more for those who are considering breeding since they have two or three dogs and want to "better the breed." I should have stated it differently. My Elvis came from a byb before we knew better and I'd hate for someone to make me feel bad for it. There's a difference between an honest mistake and purposely breeding dogs when you don't know what you're doing.

True, but many members do come here before getting their pups too. I really hope that people aren't ashamed to admit where their dogs have come from either. Mila isn't from the greatest breeder ever, but you live and you learn!

Yup, it's been QUITE the debate on FB over this article.... but as Kristen and I both pointed out over there, the article is getting read. Over and over and over. There are a couple total fools on that thread right now, but there are almost 1500 people in that group. I bet we reached at least one of them today. Here's hoping!

Yup..I"m glad you posted it kaila..everywhere. Since everyone loves controversy....your post has been good for the breed. For every person that commented, another 20 read it and kept silent. But learned from it.

Yeah, for a while I though the one guy from the UK was a troll. He just doesn't get it. I as I'm sure a lot of people here, have friends/contacts in Europe and the UK, and I'm sure not EVERYONE in the uk places puppies at 8 weeks, as well as some of his other sayings. He sure is a piece of work.

One thing everyone needs to understand.... This is not about NOT breeding ever, this is about identifying those who are breeding dogs that do not show concern for this breed and its future. At the rate Newfoundlands are being bred by indiscriminate breeders, in ten more years, this breed will no longer be a 'gentle giant'. They will look like an over grown long haired Labrador. The majority of Newfoundlands being bred, and entering into Shelters and Rescues are not coming from reputable breeders.

Below is SCNR's 2012 National Catalog Ad, showing statistics just from our rescue alone. Covering Indiana, & Ohio, parts of Kentucky and Michigan.

Hey Susan, Do you know how many of the BYBs would have been registered with the AKC? I've been trying to look at ways to explain on mass that being CKC or AKC reg'd isn't enough, and that puppy buyers should be looking at breeders that are also members of the NCA or NDCC.

I don't have hard numbers for that as there are so many people who lose their registration papers and don't provide them when they surrender the dog. If I would take a guess, I would say absolutely the majority are AKC registered. I would love to be able to search the AKC database by persons name, but no way will they ever allow that. haha

The biggest thing to simply and try to explain is.... the AKC and CKC are just registries. The National Breed Clubs are the owners of the breed standard and responsible for the preservation and protection of their specific breed. So looking to the breed clubs for information and a breeder is increasing your chances of getting a dog who most fits the standard of what you are paying for. They also increase your chances of getting a healthy puppy and a breeder who will return your call when you need advise or something goes wrong.
