Identifying backyard breeders!!

Hello everyone!!

I think this may have been shared on here before, but we do have some new members to the group and I definitely think it is worth passing along again.

Here in Ontario, Canada we are really struggling with a couple particular BYBs!!! It is sooooo frustrating!!!! We are currently trying to educate as much as possible!

We need YOUR help too though!!! We are all ambassadors of this breed and we should ALL be looking out for their best interests.

So, PLEASE take the time to read these incredibly helpful tips on how to identify (and avoid!!) the dreaded backyard breeder!! Please feel free to share this valuable information as it is not just applicable to Newfs!

You would not believe the knuckleheads on FB debating this post right now. It's disturbing and appalling. And intensely disheartening. :(

Really good post.

And Kristen...I had been thinking about seeking out some Newf FB groups but after hearing that...no.

Mary, I swear NN still has the the best and most conscientious owners and breeders on it. We're an awesome collection of Newf people :)

Yup, it's been QUITE the debate on FB over this article.... but as Kristen and I both pointed out over there, the article is getting read. Over and over and over. There are a couple total fools on that thread right now, but there are almost 1500 people in that group. I bet we reached at least one of them today. Here's hoping!

I just spent the better part of 30 minutes reading that entire post. I'm not a breeder, nor will I ever be a breeder. I did my research, found a breeder I like who has a cleared dam and sire and clears her pups. After reading all of that I had to sympathize with one person who posted about the fact that she was a new newf owner and after all of the reading she has done is now afraid if he hiccups. That's going to be me!!

You'll be like that no matter what, simply because he's a puppy. Don't let the few that are acting like knuckleheads get to you.

Example: my Maggie came to me at 11 weeks, had all her checks and clearances, and I rushed her to the vet because I thought she was bloating. Because she had what I thought vomited, but in hindsight was probably just spit.

I have also rushed a cat to the vet because she sneezed, and it was from drywall dust.

:roflmao: my poor Ragdoll! I've taken him to the vet 3 times for hairballs!! He can't just vomit out a hairball, he has to cough for a day and work it out. The first time the vet did some tests because of the coughing and said he was fine. The second time she did the tests as well and he was fine. The third time she kept him overnight until he coughed up the hairball, saved it for me and basically said (not in these words exactly) "I told you so, now chill out".

Jedi has, thus far, not done anything that would require a rush to the vet.*knock on wood* However, I'm much more paranoid about the newf simply because of all of the reading I've done.

WOW........You did such a fabulous job!! I don't see why anyone would fuss about this....unless they are a BYB themselves....

So true about rushing to the vet. But the only thing worse than hearing "He's fine; that will be $350" is "I wish you had brought him in sooner; I'm sorry I can't do anything."

Exactly, Terri.

Just to be fair, I was also a rusher-to-the-pediatrician. I called them when my daughter rolled over a week earlier than she was "supposed" to and back to front, instead of front to back. I was convinced something was terriblly wrong.

Interesting article. Unfortunately we now have a Back Yard Breeder in our area. No petagree research, no health checks, got the Bitch pregnant, and not going to the Vet until near time to Welp. Already counting the Money. No consideration on the birth (What if a C Section is needed), no mentor, and Oh did I mention, counting the money? Learned they are going to use an X-Pen for a whelping box (Shudder). Was told by a judge (judges Internationally) that Dog was not Show/Breeding Quality. Makes me mad enought to spit, cause it's all about the money.
