Hoping to rescue

My wife and have done a lot of research on dogs, and in the last month we've focussed on newfs. We attended the recent water trials near Indianapolis, and loved it. We've visited with a friend who has 4 newfs.

We are convinced that a newf is for us.

We've put in our application with the local chapter of newf rescue, but haven't heard back from them yet.

What's the next step in the rescue process?

How often do dogs come available through rescue?

Newf. Rescue is a great place to start, you can also keep your eye out on Petfinder
They are mostly mixes, however occasionally that have a few purebreds. My first dog was a Newfie mix and we had him for eleven years, he was the best. Newf. personality wrapped up in a smaller dogs body. He was what got me interested in the breed.
I think you can also call around to some reputable breeders, sometimes they get owner turn ins for all kind of reasons.
Be patient & Good luck
You will never regret having a Newf.
in your life.

Hi!!! I am a member of SCNC who hosted the water trial you attended. I'm not sure if we met, but SCNC does have a rescue committee. If you're interested, I can send you an application!

I had also thought about rescue when ready to obtain a Newfie - we won't be ready for one til' sometime next year - but am discouraged because I don't think we'd qualify. We have a nice big house and a lovely yard - only 1/3-1/2 acre, but nice, and access to several parks nearby. We have two dogs already, very well taken care of and loved. We don't, however, have a fenced in yard. This poses a problem, does it not?

Thanks in advance.

LOL, sounds great Shifty!

Did you get your Newf from Watchbear Kennel by chance? I know they are in our neck of the woods. I hope to visit there soon.

From my experience with rescue, unless you have a fenced yard you will not qualify to adopt a rescue.

Most rescues have 2 main rules. One is your newf must be a house pet and two a fenced yard. I know of many people that would give a newf a wonderful home, but no fence, so no rescued newf. :(

This is what I thought. Well, we'll either invest in a fence or look elesewhere - haven't decided. I have alot more research to do before making my decision being that I haven't been involved with the breed for several years now. Alot to catch up on!

Thanks for the info Jeannie. ;)

Hello again Laura, actually both of our kids came from rescues, although neither came through Newf Rescue. Our boy was actually in Copley and due to some issues within the family he was living with had to be let go. We met with the owners and went through all of the reference checks and ended up with our boy shortly thereafter.

Matilda, our girl, was found at a kill shelter in PA. A woman just happened to stop in there looking for a different dog and took her on her last day to avoid seeing this newf put down. She dropped our girl off at a kennel cared for her and got her healthy again and eventually we ended up with her through the adoption process again.

I have sent several emails to Watchbear over the past six months or so when we first started considering an addition to the family. I never could get a response from them, which was kind of sad because they are located so close to home. It was never a "big deal" because we were only playing with the idea of a second newf at the time...and then we were blessed with Matilda from Pa so everything worked out for the best IMHO.

Good luck in your search.

Regards,

Mike

Hi Mike, that's wonderful that you were able to rescue your babies.
Wish I could but like I said, I don't have a fenced in yard...maybe we'll have to do something about that, or maybe I'll end up finding a reputable breeder, we'll see. Then when I do your wife and you will have to meet my husband and I for a doggie playdate like you said! ;)

If you actually do organize a drive, my wife & I would be willing to assist driving a leg through the area.
