Hello. I am the owner of Rocco, a 15 week old Newfie. I am so glad a forum like this exists. Although, my oldest son and i are currently enrolled in obedience training, we appreciate any and all advice/tips on how to make Rocco a happy well adjusted dog :)

Welcome to Beth/Rocco and also to Dave M, both posting for the first time. We are here to help in any way we can. Be sure to search the forum for lots of good info.

I'm especially delighted to know that you are already in obedience classes. Good call. That will help a lot. If these Newfs were pocket size dogs, everything they did would be cute. Not so when your pup is huge! Multiply all naughty behavior by a factor of 1000. LOL.

My best tip for now is to remain patient and loving. These dogs thrive on kind, but clear directions, but will shut down with harsh treatment, especially if it's physical. Everyone will think your dog is a big oaf just because of his size, but they have no idea how extremely intelligent a Newf is. And you'll find out soon enough.

Be sure to search for old posts on crate training, biting/jumping, and such. Those are the things we most often address with new members.

So glad you have joined us and congratulations on such a handsome looking puppy! Ask any questions you like.

What a beauty! Like Jane said, positive patient training is the key. Your puppy will go through many phases until he matures into the wonderful laid back characteristics of the breed. Welcome!

Welcome and congratulations on your new baby. I agree with what Jane and Jeannie suggested; gentle positive guidance, obedience classes, and making him an integral part of your family, and soon you will have a magnificent addition to your family, who will participate in many wonderful memories for many years to come.

Hello Everyone. Thank you for the warm welcome and Happy New Year. I love all your Newfies :). Rocco's most recent vet visit was last Monday. He is 16 weeks and weighs 52 lbs. He gained 26 lbs in one month. Does that seem on track? I am searching older posts and working on the jumping and nipping. I have four children, my oldest is almost 9 years old and my youngest is 16 months old. Right now, Rocco has to be separated from the youngers at all times. Any tips on how to properly introduce them or is it a "in time" thing? My home is surrounded by gates.

I also wanted to add: he absolutely thrives on treats/ positive reinforcement, but doesnt acknowledge being reprimanded at all. We are using "NO" and "OFF". For example, when he tries to hop on the counter and I say OFF. He ignores me. I have to lure him off with a treat. When he sees the treat and gets down, I repeat the word off and give him the treat. Is that correct? Obedience Class is great and we are learning a lot, but he isnt his true self in class; he is an ANGEL, lol! He sits calmly without so much as a peep out of him. If i could read his mind, I would swear he was calling the other dogs simpletons :) .
