Hi, My name is Deb and I am new to this forum. I'm a single mom of an almost 18 yo boy and we live on a small farm in N. Indiana. I have chickens, turkeys and indoor birds (2 cockatiels, currently sitting on eggs and a Quaker parrot), a 2 yo Australian Shepherd and Sebastian, my 2 yo male Newf. Sebastian just came to live with me about 5-6 weeks ago after being raised by another family. They could no longer keep him so I was lucky enough to be able to get him. He's my first Newf. I've wanted a Newf for so long, he's a dream come true. I'd love to say he's the perfect dog, but truth is, he wouldn't have had to leave his former home if he had been LOL. He's really a good boy, but can be a handful at times. With a lot of consistancy and work on his obedience commands (he went thru some obedience training in his former life, thank goodness) we're doing a lot better than at first. He doesn't know a stranger and wants to love and be loved by everyone. We go to PetSmart occasionally and he's really pretty good and as long as he's under the "heel" command, he's manageable. I don't think he went too many places before so I'm really pleased with his manners in public most of the time. He's really very much still a puppy, behavior-wise. He's quite a velcro dog, following me from room to room in the house, doesn't like being outside alone etc. When we go outside he's either on a leash or on a 50 foot rope attached to a tree limb. I live on a 4-lane highway with no fence. Although the times he dashed out the door (before we started sit-stay before going out the door) he hasn't run from me, I still don't trust him off lead. If he saw something across the highway, I'm not sure he wouldn't try to go investigate if he was off-lead. I don't leave hims tied out alone for long periods but having him on the rope lets him explore the yard and frees me up to do chores without worrying about where he is. He sometimes prefers to stay out for a while but is able to come to the door to be let in when he wants to. He usually doesn't stay out too long alone.
Well, this has gotten long. I'm glad to have found this forum.

Hi Deb! Welcome to Newf Net. I'm looking forward to getting to know you and Sebastian.

SCNC (South Central Newfoundland Club) is having a fun day and picnic this coming Sunday, (June 8th) at Eagle Creek Metro Park in Indianpolis. Anyone is welcome to attend.. and newfs and other dogs are included. All dogs must be on leash, and it would be a good idea to be sure and bring plenty of water for your dogs.

We'll be meeting at Noon, Indy time, at shelter A. If you (or anyone else) is interested in attending, please private message me, and I'll be happy to give you more details!

Thanks for the welcomes. Kirsten, I live south of Lakeville. We're practically neighbors. I have a couple of pictures but don't know how to put them in.

Welcome!

To do the picture thing you need to get them on a photo website like fototime.com or community.webshots.com. Then you post a link.

Good luck! ;)

A play date would be cool. Somebody that Sebastian could roughouse with. He's too big for me to play the way he wants to. The former owner said he thought he was around 150 pounds. I know he's strong. We play tug of war some but I don't last too long at that!
