Hello I'm new!

I'm the owner of a 20 month old female Newfie, named Madison. I live in the Chicago area, and recently applied for membership to the NCNC (waiting on them to vote me in or out), and have been subscribing to the Newf-L for the last 5-6 years, on and off. I've wanted a newf for so so so so long. So happy to have my beautiful girl.

Newf-L has been a bit political and snide lately (this is not really a bad thing, as the topics are relevant, but it does get tiresome) so I decided to try an alternative forum for learning more about newfs and talking about the breed. Still happily subscribing to newf-L, however.

I am an all-around animal lover and also have a Mastiff and a Rottweiler, as well as two kitties.

Welcome! I also have my application into the NCNC right now. I heard I'm being voted on next month! Maybe you're in that group also.

You DO have a whole lotta dog at your house! My sister has an 8 month old brindle Mastiff right now. She cracks me up. Can't wait til seehow much more she grows. It's the first Mastiff I've been around.

You'll enjoy Newf-net. Lots of friendly folks here.

Welcome to Newf Net. I am also on Newf-L and I recognize you by your dogs
. You had sent me pictures of your crew a month or so ago. I wanted to see what a "furry" mastiff looked like. He sure is a cutie! You'll have to share those great photos of your dogs with everyone here.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I'll post pictures very soon.

To answer a question: An Irish Spotted Newfie has a white blaze on chest, and white feet, and whit on the tip of the tail. It is a particular gene that is expressed when a Landseer is bred to a black. It is also common in other breeds of dogs. An irish spotted newfie is not acceptable for the show ring. I'm not completely doing this explanation justice, as I'm not a breeder, but this is basically what it is. I'll post pics soon and you can see for yourself what Maddy looks like.

Thank you for the explanation of an "Irish spotted newfie".
I think there's one like that at our playdates and she's a very pretty newf.
Can't wait to see pictures!

Irish-spotted can also appear when doing black-to-black breedings. Any white where not allowed by the Standard on a black dog is usually considered an Irish-spotted.
In the case of Landseer x black breedings, in order to get an Irish spotted Newf, the black must carry the irish spotted gene. The irish spotted gene must be expressed with Landseer x black breedings. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to setting up a photo page. I had several Irish-spotted Newfs from breeding my Landseer bitch to a dominate black dog who carried the Irish spotting gene. Some of the offspring had so much white on them (chest, bellies, legs, tail, even collars) that they could have passed for Landseers.

A little ironic that you posted this now...

NewfNet is not always this crazy. Usually it is a fun and informative place to go! Stick around and you'll find that out. Welcome and I can't wait to see pics of your Newf!
