Hello from Italy - can you advise?

Hello to all! I am a new member here and will be getting my NEWF this week. We went Saturday to buy the crate and all the supplies so we are ready to bring our baby home.. question is this: I have available to me a female puppy (Landseer) from a great breeder here but just Saturday (when I called her from the store for advice on a few things) she offered me a 1yr old male unneutered that she owns and needs to find a home for because she has too many and bought him from a breeder in Brussels to compliment her blood lines but now does not need him. Strange explaination if you ask me but maybe true. Thoughts? I have 3 children under 5 yrs. I want my Newf to live indoors and be crate trained for safety and security of the dog/children/home etc. Is it easier if I take home my new little girl or adopt this 1yr old male? The male currently lives in the kennel so I am afraid that it will be very difficult to crate train him and house break him. Thoughts?

First of all, welcome to NewfNet - a great group of folks here and tons of information.

Research the following links for more information:

Newfoundland Club of America

All About Newfs - NCA

NCA Rescue Network - You will be amazed at the information you can receive from many of the folks involved with Newf Rescue.

NCA Breeders List - Another great resource for information about Newfs.

Regional Newfoundland Clubs - Contact the regional Newfoundland club in your area; again, another great resource.

Health Issues in Newfoundlands - Are you prepared for these and the costs associated with them?

NCA Rescue Education and Awareness

Research BEFORE making a commitment - you, your family and your Newf will be happy you did. Although the links above may not be specific to your location (Italy), the information on Newfs doesn't change.

Feel free to email me privately - potential "Red Flags" to look out for, especially in some things you have indicated.

Hi and welcome to NN.
You might want to PM both newfam and Emma & Nigel's Mom about your questions.
One has 7 kids and the other, I think has 4 and they probably can give you lots of advice re. one yr old versus a puppy.

depends on whether the 1year old has been trained or not, temperament etc. We rescued a 5 1/2 month old male and he is very hyperactive, stubborn, etc and though he's good with kids he is boisterous. You need to see him to assess him, if ok why not have two, keep each other company and train together and newfs are very addictive. Speak to the others on the forums as they are full of great advice. and which ever way you go enjoy your newf

I have two daughters ages 6 and 8. Our newf, Tank, is our first and she is 9 months. It was hard in the beginning bc the puppy needed so much attention and training during the potty training. I wanted to rescue but my husband wanted a puppy bc our previous dog was not good with our daughters, so he wanted to start fresh. Tank is excellent with the girls and other kids. She does not chase them at all. She has knocked over my 6 year old daughter once, but no one was hurt. We have had 9 kids in the back yard playing at one time and Tank just follows them around or will try to get them to play her favorite game of chase(where she runs and someone chases her). I also had a problem when Tank was about 4 or 5 months old....she started out smarting me. So we had some private lessons to help me! :) She is the smartest dog I have ever had. Tank and I walk to school almost every afternoon to pick the girls up and everyone there loves her.
I would think the training would be about the same maybe easier with a one year old since they are such smart dogs, but the others on here would know much better. Welcome and good luck! You will find great advice here!

:kgo_057: From Newf Jersey!!
Visit the older dog & see its temperment, Our Merlin was always calm but Tiki is approaching a year & he is on the hyper side, has to be watched around our grandkids, but he is just excitable & eventually calms down.. Training is a must!

Welcome to Newf Net the best place on the web for Newf Lovers!! My grandfather was from Italy, so it holds a special place in my heart, as do the Newf breeders there. I am not going to repeat all the great advice already given...just follow it and let us know who your lucky Newf is. Pictures are always appreciated.
