Hello everyone - happened to do a search for newfoundland forum and found this place...:allg069:

My wife and I have had giant breeds for as long as we have been married (25 years) - Usually Saints and Danes.

We lost our house to a tornado about 2 years ago (everyone was fine) and had to stay in a duplex that did not allow pets... (Cats went to my sisters, Dogs (Saint and Dane) as well as an african grey parrot and bearded dragon went to my parents house (yes, for almost 2 years). Thankfully they live close enough we were able to visit fairly often, but still - we missed the dogs (and rest of the zoo) very much.

A week before we were able to bring the dogs home, my Saint had to be put down (at 8 years old) after she was diagnosed with bone cancer. Both my human and remaining dog family were devastated. We have always been one to say (while we had 2 dogs) that if something ever happened to one of them, we would just drop down to a single dog. Whenever something does (A disturbingly often amount of time in our 25 years) we always end up with another dog fairly quickly.

We have been interested in newfs for quite a long time, but have never owned one. (we have purchased from breeders before, but most of our dogs have come from rescues in the past so we have been limited to what was available). This time we saw a newf puppy advertised locally and went to check her out. We ended up getting her at 9 weeks old and named her Daisy.

She is now 16 weeks old. She is definitely on the small side for a female newf, but she is pretty thin as well (we are currently free feeding her and she is eating about 3 cups per day) (at 16 weeks she is only about 30 pounds)

She is enrolled in puppy class (obedience) 1 day per week and we take her to a doggie day care 1 day per week to help with socialization. I try and take her someone once or twice per week to get her around people as well. (Bass Pro, Local Mall, PetSmart, etc.)

Since this is our first newf, we were not sure what to expect, but so far she seems to be crazy smart and has been an excellent puppy for the short time we have had her.

Anyway, glad to find a group of dog fanatics that i can ask questions of.

Thank you for inviting us in.

Michael

Here is a pic of Daisy at about 14 weeks....

:kgo_057: from Canada. She is very cute.
One thing I would wonder though, is only 3cups a day enough?
Hope to hear more about her.

I agree, it does not seem to be enough. I feed her 2 cups in the morning and another 2 cups in the evening. I dont take it away and let her graze as she wants. Most days there is about a cup left at the end of the day.

I am currently feeding this....

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the welcome. We are in Washington.
Ahh explains the tornado. Didn't our new City Manager come from your town, Tim Gleason? I am thinking when the City Council hired him, his handling of the tornado damage was highlighted. Anyway sorry to read of the loss of your Saint.

I am Snuffles second owner, but have known him since he was like 8 or 9 weeks old. I got him when he was a bit over 2. He was always kind of a lanky slow grower, but filled out by 5. You probably want slow growth anyway. He is 11 1/2 now. He dose have a bad ACL that we did not have surgery on because he was almost 10 1/2 then. So do not get around much, but before that I took him just about everywhere I could. So it sounds like you are trying to socialize.

We feed Taste of The Wild Pacific Stream here. Snuffles never really liked dry food. As a puppy in his old home, he would go like 24 hours without eating then binge eat. Here we do 2 meal times and he gets some topper that is generally a lot of water too, and he eats pretty good then. I think if you search the groups, you will find a lot of opinions on food and protein levels for a young pup.

Anyway gotta go, and welcome to Newf.net

Welcome to Newf.Net!!! :)

I can't help with anything as I am currently just a newf enthusiast, but wanted to say hi and welcome! :)

Welcome. Daisy is a cute little girlie! Congrats. 4Health is fine food for giant breeds. That's what I feed my newf, dane, and Irish wolfhound. I rotate proteins between fish, beef, chicken and pork.

Welcome!!

Have you considered not free-feeding? You may find she eats more if her food gets taken away after a certain period of time. :)

Welcome...she is a cute little girl...I agree with putting the food down and if she eats fine if she doesn't fine...take it up after 20 minutes...she will get the clue she needs to eat when it is presented.
