Hello, we came home with our 8 week old puppy. He's absolutely great. we love him to death. his picture is on the left. We have started on him with crate training and he's doing fine. The only question is our breeder trained the pups from the beginning to pee on a blanket//carpet so we have had to pull up every bit of carpet and we feel bad because he cannot have a blanky in his crate, or sleep on the couch with us, even riding in the car, as soon as his paws touch anything material he pees or poops. any suggestions how to break his habit without making him feel bad. This is not his fault but the breeders. I have to say he looks like a little bear cub running and he has definately made us laugh alot. He goes for his vet visit today so we are all excited to show him off. He is now 10 weeks old and still pees on everything so I could use some help. Lily.

Welcome! I'd say you've come to the right place. People with much more experience than I will be able to help you. I'd say the number one thing is showing him the right place to go to the bathroom. Lots and lots of praise when he goes in the grass. But I don't know anything to stop the peeing immediately. Hopefully someone will help! He sure is adorable!

He is so cute that I want him! Welcome to NN. I haven't had a pup in YEARS, but you will get great advice here, soon, I'm sure!

JMHO, but at 8 weeks I don't think he's conditioned by the breeder to go on carpets, etc. I think he's just gotta go and he's not yet associated it with the outdoors. At that age (and for a long while to come...) he has to be taken out constantly, consistantly and rewarded/praised for going outdoors.

:kgo_057: from western Wisconsin. So jealous that you have a little Newfie to love. What is his name? Good luck with the potty training. Be patient he is still very young. And have fun!!

Welcome from Beautiful BC!
To help with the potty training, try using a 'cue'.
With Tug I used "Get busy" when & where I wanted him to go, then praised to High Heaven when he did. Now, I say it and he does it ;)
Good luck!

Hello from Australia.....I just noticed your request for help with potty training............How is it going. I have little Katy and she is seventeen weeks ol. So i know where you are coming from. At eight weeks it is unlikely that she has really been trained to any surface. they just go, and go and go :)
My first week was half hourly piddle stops. whilst i was awake. if the puppy was asleep. I left her. But as soon as she was awake we were out. And she got lots of exited verbal praise and a little liver treat.
We also have the bells on the door handle. And every time we went out I rang them. She was also attached to me if she was not in the crate. I call that the umbilical system. I even potty trained a 13month old newf rescue that way last year.
I even potty them when I hear them up and about in the crate to discourage wetting in the crate. Even in the middle of the night I tried (very hard some times) to sound happy and exited to go out for potty.
Katy has been free roaming in the house for a few weeks now, with no mistakes. She rings the bells or she lets out this loud bark in my ear when I am asleep. I get up straight away and tell her she is good and of we go. the couple of mishaps she had in the early days we completely ignored and just cleaned up and made sure no smell was left. Her only mistakes have been when she was "forgotten". And she tried to go out, so it was done on the floormat near the door. But that is our fault.
Being positive and consistent is the only way. Even Annabelle at thirteen months was taught. It has been a long time since any mistakes. Good luck and enjoy your gorgeous little pup, Ronnie
