Hello and help

Hi to all. This is our first newfie and we wanted to join a group that we can reach out to when we have questions and to share our love of the breed. We ended up with Bo, our 19 month old newfoundland, because our 13 year old golden retriever/newfoundland mix (Jake) passed away. We loved him so much that we searched for another mix, but after researching the newfoundland, we came to the conclusion that the characteristics that we loved the best were all newfie. Enter Bo! He is everything we hoped for and more.

The only question we really have at this time is, "Does anyone else own a newf that is afraid of swimming"? We introduced him to the water last summer, but he was only seven months old and didn't really love it so we didn't push it. He would wade in and dunk his head under, but if his feet went out from under him, he would panic and head to shore with big choppy panicked swim strokes. This summer we introduced him again at the dog park and he would wade to his chest and turn around and walk out. He did get pushed in off the crowded dock at the dog park and went under, but came up swimming and swam straight to the ramp and walked out. I even bought him a life jacket thinking it would give him some confidence and a feeling of security, but he is just not having it. Went to the lake with the family to swim this past weekend and the kids thought if they acted like they needed help his instincts would kick in and he would swim to save them. NOPE! He looked concerned and then headed up the bank to the car! :) Does anyone with more experience than us have any suggestions or input?????

Our boy Jake who is 5 is the same way...he is NOT crazy about water at all...he will go in up to his tummy and that is it...no swimming for him...I guess they all are different.

I am a new Newfie owner as well and we have discovered our 4 yr old Newf isn't fond of water either! We have a pool and she wants nothing to do with it. She gets excited when our Lab is swimming and she barks at him, but that's it! I did take her to the beach and she loved the sand and the surf. She doesn't like to take baths either!

I've had a total of 5 newfs. Two of them hated the water, the other 3 I couldn't keep out. I say just let him do what he feel comfortable. He is still young and my come around.

Put a life jacket on him. I used a ski belt, but it was ill fitting. They make life jackets for dogs. That may give him the confidence he needs. None of my dogs like the water at first. Then you couldn't keep them out of it.

Thanks for all the input! We were very curious if others experienced this. We will continue to take him with us and let him do his thing. If he swims great if not - oh well. It gives the other people around us something to laugh at when you have a 150 lb. water rescue dog with a life jacket on shunning the water. Ha.

Start slow. We are on our 2nd rescue and they were not introduced to water early in life. With Maggie, we went to our local newf club water workshop to learn some techniques to teach her.

We put a life jacket on her and slowly walked her in with lots of high value treats. Go to an area that slopes in. Stand right where the dog can walk if they are in front of you but has to swim behind you.

Slowly walk the dog around you, just so they have to take 1-2 swim strokes and are then back on sure footing. Lots of treats and rewards. Never force.

Maggie never liked to swim but would wade in and was perfectly happy. She would rescue us if we went out too far though.

So your dog may never love the water, but you can keep at it and see what happens!

My second Newf Emma was terrified of water and never did swim even though her "brother" Gus was a water addict.

I had the opportunity of taking Emma to a well known animal communicator and asked why Emma hated water. The answer Emma gave her was most interesting.......

In Emma's past life she had been a Jack Russel living on a farm that had a pond. Her job was to catch the rats and she was told to NEVER go near the pond.......

Well, one day Emma ventured into the pond and drowned :(
So, coming back in her new life as a Newf she would never go near water.
Go figure!!!!!

So, maybe something happened to Bo in his past life :) !!!!!
