Health Testing

When getting the Cystinuria Testing test done by OptiGen, do the results automatically get sent to OFA?

Also, how do you get your dogs health testing to post on AKC's Medical Screens section?

No, you need to submit an application http://www.offa.org/pdf/dnaapp_bw.pdf with a copy of the test results and the appropriate payment.

As to your next question, do you mean included in the AKC database? If so: http://www.offa.org/faqs.html#19
"Why is my dog's OFA number not printed on its AKC paperwork?
There is a lag time of approximately one month between the time the OFA issues breed numbers and the time this information is imported into the AKC registry. It should be noted that the AKC requires dogs to be permanently identified in the form of tattoo or microchip in order to include their OFA results in the AKC database. Effective 1/1/08, only dogs with verified permanent identification (VPI) will have their OFA data transmitted to the AKC for inclusion in their database."

Slightly related...is there a guide to reading OFA results/etc.? I found Loki's mom and dad (sorry, "dam and sire") in their database but I don't have the first clue what I'm looking at.

Yeah that's a good question. I was looking at the other dogs in the pedigree and there's a group of numbers and letters, what do those mean. I'm used to seeing "good, excellent, poor, normal, clear, etc"

Also, as far as AKC, I mean, when you look at "manage dogs" when you're logged in, and you click the dogs name, at the bottom it comes up "medical screens" and mine says "none" when I have had some done.

And thanks!

I have no idea what the AKC does with the Info. I have three TODD Newfies, none of them are listed in AKC with any screenings except CERF.

Hmm. I guess I can ask them.

Does anyone know the turn-around time for the Cystinuria and thyroid tests?

I have a free blood draw for both of my dogs at the vet right now and they said I can get all the blood drawn for the tests all free so I want to make sure I get any test done that needs a blood draw :)

I have Chic, Cystinuria, and Thyroid. Am I missing anything, even if its optional?

I like to be thorough ;-)

Now if only I could bring myself to get the testing done that I need. My cholesterol is probably sky high :X

When on OFA, when you click on the name of the dog, the results will come up under there name like good, excellent etc. If you want to see the actual scores of their dam/sire/siblings etc, you need to click on the actual name, then it will bring up their sheet.

CHIC is not a test, it's a designation when you have testing done on hips/elbow/cystinuria/heart, I believe.

TOD/TODD are designations given by the NCA. TOD is the CHIC tests with either no DNA submission or DNA submission by swab. TODD is CHIC tests plus DNA submission by blood. I didn't know that and only did a DNA swab with Liz.

I can't think of any other tests that require blood off hand. If you are planning to breed then you probably want Patella and CERF (eyes) done as well (and an echo on the heart rather than just auscultation). HTH!

I have hip pre-lims and patella (waiting on 24 months to re-test hips).

I was going to go to the show locally to get the heart done but I'm not sure if they do echo or not? I'll have to ask. Cornell usually comes to do it.

And Cerf I think needs to be done yearly. The only "diplomate" here is the most expensive vet in town. They're crooks, let me tell you lol. I wonder if Cornell will do it at the show as well!!!

And that's for everything!!

I am testing both Mousse and Milo.

I had Milos hip prelims done awhile ago (his elbows were x-rayed by mistake as well by the vet but they didn't give me them to send to OFA because I didn't pay for them). He had his patellas done as well.

He's going and getting his full OFA for hips and elbows this year.

Mousse had her Patellas and Hips done a couple weeks ago. I'm still waiting on OFA to do the hips but I'm assuming I'll have the patella info in the mail any day now since she's posted on the website already.

I find it important to test them regardless of whether or not I plan to breed. It's something I want to get in the habit of doing, and I want the information for my own records and curiosity.

I'd also like to get a handler with Mousse in the next year or so depending on what's going on around here. I hear there's a really great handler in Buffalo! :)
