Have I completely lost touch with the world?

Ugh...for both breeds.
Ditto!

The GRCA Breed Standard is very specific as to size and weight. They're much more stringent on size than the Newf standard is.

There are out of standard Goldens of course. I have two that are 90 lb males. That's a tad large. By about 15 lbs. And they're too tall for the breed standard. Both are about 27" at the withers. Disqualified!
My golden would be disqualified as well. 10lbs to heavy and 2 inches to tall. I've had 2 rescue goldens and neither would qualify for the the standard. Our previous golden was even larger.

Could you imagine a 100lb dog with a 1year old golden exuberance? Ugg

This makes me sad:( I realize that all purebreds were originally mixed...this was for a purpose. A young man I used to work with a few years back, said his mother was looking for the right lab and poodle to breed. This woman is involved in a local rescue and I was shocked. I asked him why and he said (her words were) "do you know how much people are paying for these mutts?" So sad...

there is absolutely no reason or benefit to mix these breeds!! we also have seen a few too many coming into rescue that seem to be coming from west of the city. designer breed ??NOT!! both are wonderful dogs but they do not need to be mixed, just another puppy mill excuse to breed.

I'm currently working on a Border Collie/Mastiff/Lab designer breed. I want a dog that will round up the sheep and then deliver them to hand.

So the latest one I've been seeing is a Schnauser/Yorkie. I'm now thinking of all the mixes that have become designer breeds (please add to the list if you will). Mugs (Maltese/Pugs), Schnoodles (Schnauser/Poodle), Morkies (Maltese/Yorkies), Shihpoos (Shih Tsu/Poodles), Maltipoo (Maltese/Poodles), Labradoodles (Lab/Poodle), Goldenpoos (Golden/Poodles), Jugs (Jack Russel/Pug). I know a girl who mixes Border Collies with Jack Russels (for agility) and she's doing it by AI and I know there are tons I'm forgetting. Unfortunately supply and demand keeps these breeders mixing breeds and try telling the owners of any of these designer dogs that reputable breeders don't mix breeds.

Yes if there is a way to stop this I'll be first in line.

Right now we're trying to help a Newf mix (perhaps mixed with Golden or maybe a Lab) in our Animal Shelter. They like him, so he's safe for now. He was an owner turn in. They didn't want him anymore. UGH. He has the big square head of a Newf, broad chest, true Newf coat, but he's smaller...and not as bulky as a Newf.

He's also very housetrained. Won't even go in his run. He has to be walked. But...the owner said he doesn't like cats or children. We haven't had a chance to find out what that means yet..but he hasn't ever bitten. Someone is trying to get more info.

So...if anyone has any ideas or knows of any rescues that might be able to take him, please let me know.

Good job Kelly. I had no idea there were so many. It saddens me even more now to know this.

As the proud owner of both I am probably the most annoyed by the mixing of the two. Both are amazing, special and unique breeds... Why ruin that by mixing? Maybe I should breed Gabe & Murphy together and make some money ;) Totally ridiculous. I am not against mixed breeds in the slightest... In fact I think some of the best dogs out there are mixes- the idiotic thing is that people PAY for them... Top dollar... For a mix. People need to get a grip.

It's all about the money. Our beautiful, trusting dogs, never know the dark side of being human. If so, they forgive. This always makes me ill. Of course, we'll never live up to our dog's expectations.

We met a doxie/scottish terrier mix last night. And when I say met, I mean Maggie almost killed him because he has the personality of both, and wrapped his leash around hers and ended up on her back, on his back, pretty much by his neck.

When we got them untangled, his owner explained this woman was breeding them ON PURPOSE and she felt bad so she took him. He had a long doxie body, but the head of a scottie. And the attitude of both. :uhoh2:

so agree jess!!! also a problem growing is the fact that this "designer breed" market is leaving the shelters and rescues full of dogs not being adopted!!! why adopt a mutt from the shelter , that is alot of the time fixed, utd on shots, has some training, and temperment accessed when you can get the same thing with a "designer label" for $800 on kijiji???????? i cannot understand the naivaty/stupidity of some!!!!! and its getting to the point that it is not only adults being looked past in rescues by adopters but puppies also!!!

I agree Patti it is so sad what's being done and, of course, supply and demand only encourages these BYB's and mills. If people keep buying them this will never stop. There's a woman here who sells her puppies at the Pickering Flea Market. My mother has a Bichon from her that she retired from breeding I suppose. She told my mother she has 100 dogs and she loves them all. I tried explaining to my mother that this woman is a puppymill and my mother doesn't get it. Oh all her dogs are called Buster and Buddy. My sister was at this flea market and she saw mixed breeds that the woman was selling and she said they were the ugliest dogs she's ever seen and what was she mixing them with. She used to have only purebred (questionable) dogs and now she's doing designer breeds. Plus do you think she even checks out these people who are buying the dogs? You're right so why get a puppy from a shelter when you can get one of these poorly bred dogs and tell people about your designer breed. Wish I knew where this woman lives cause I'd like to make a call to certain authorities.

I work with a woman who I always thought was bright and intelligent. Both her and her husband have PhDs in chemistry. This past Christmas, they decided their family needed a dog and purchased not one but two labradoodle puppies. They paid top dollar for these dogs. They insist these are pure bred dogs...they have the papers to prove it. They were told and they believe these dogs will not shed and they are hypoallergenic. And I'm sure these dogs will end up in a pound as soon as they shed or the kids develop allergies.

I don't care if people want to get ripped off. That's their business but they are being fed a bunch of misinformation from these so called "breeders" which they then pass on to others. This misinformation is the very stuff the breed clubs are combating against.

It makes me sad to think we as a human race believe we can breed out all the inconveniences of owning a dog.

Very well put Sue. You hit the nail on the head about breeding out the inconveniences of owning a dog. I also marvel at some of the things people tell me about papers for their mixed breed dogs. My mother even told me the other day that Goldenpoos have become a recognized breed now. I asked with whom. Honestly I can't even educate my own family members on this subject. It's not only frustrating it's bloody annoying.
