Handlers

This has been a quiet topic...so....
My husband and I have been to several shows in the area and have noticed that:
1. We are pretty ignorant when it comes to showing; and
2. It seems as though most people in our area use handlers. (The same people are in the rings with different dogs).

How does one go about finding a handler for Newfs especially? What's the cost of getting involved with this? (BTW, has anyone seen "Best of Show"? ... very funny!)

Thanks...

Hi Diane, We have already discussed this with our breeder (who handles their oun dogs)
and she said to join the local kennel club and they have mock shows for practice. There's a different name to it but i forget what it is actually called. I'd contact the local kennel club they should have a list of handlers or novice lessons.I live in Northern Ontario and if they have it here in Sudbury, they'll have it anywhere. Good luck

I have seen Best of Show. Very funny.

Around here it seems quite a few breeders act as handlers for their ex-pups and dogs.

Apart from that, I know nothing more!

Hi diane,
you can find handlers thru your kennel club, or go to shows and watch handlers.
i have shown on my own and have hired handlers, most recently there was Politics BIG time in one show morgan took BOS and i was most thankful i had a handler, OTOH it can work against you if a certain judge dislikes a certain handler *G*
wich happened to me one show, my handler told me that judge dislikes him.
so why didnt he let me show? it all comes down to the allmighty $
if you want to learn how to show your dog, there are handling seminars thru your newf club, thru the all breed clubs or search for some that might be in your area that you can go to independantly.
in order to show, newfs need to be in top shape, no fat.And beware, like it or not, politics run big time in the conformation ring.
good luck

Thanks for the guidance - we are aware that these shows can be political - which is why we lean heavily on the advice of those who have been there
!
We have gotten the names of some individuals from our breeders - so, after the Holidays, we'll set about getting in touch with these folks. Thanks again for your insight-
