hair loss

Hi,

I have a 4 month old Male Newfie pup. He has a spot on his tail approximately 2 inches long and about an inch wide that has little or no hair on it. I can see long stnads of what looks to be adult fur coming in, but not alot of it. My vet looked at it when he was 3 months old, and saw hair of varying lenghts. A friend who breeds Irish Water Spaniels said that all her dogs lose hair in the the same spot, and it grows back. Is this something common to the breed, or do I have a serious problem...he was supposed to be my Conformation Dog, but if he doesn't grow hair, I have serious doubts!
Thanks for any advice, help etc.

Hmmm, I know that a lot of our pups had a ring at the base of their tail which is the first spot where they grew their adult hair. Is it about 2 inches up from the base? Mine looked like he was wearing a scrunchy on his tail. But I haven't heard of them losing it. Hope you figure it out.

Thats exactly where it is located, the same spot where my Berners grew their adult fur..his breeders think the hair was rubbed off because he would squeeze through the kennel bars to be near the Berners...I would have thought it would have grown back by now tho...

Long after the fact, but I am glad this was asked...I was wondering why droopy had a "funky spot" by the base of his tail...now i know.
