Growth

When does a Newfie stop growing? Our Newfie is 10 months old and beautiful. I am just curious about how much more he will grow. We are not sure of his weight because he doesn't fit on the scale at the vets anymore. They can't get an accurate weight for him. He of course is a big dog and I am just wondering how much longer until his full growth potential is met. Never think to ask this question while standing in the vets office ha ha.

By about 2 years they have attained most of their height and bulk, but some dogs continue filling out until they are 5. River had her most recent growth between 20 and 24 months.

Wow he is not done yet. His parents were on the small side for Newfies about 130 and we thought maybe he would be also. Which was fine with us but the vet estimates him at about 120 or so at his last visit about a month ago so maybe he is gonna beat mom and dad. We love him either way. Thanks for the info.

You can take him into your local PetSmart and weigh him. They "usually" have the large step-on scales at the vet office there (Banfield). Most of them are out in front, not behind the counter, so anyone can weigh their pets.

Thanks. We will do that. We normally shop at a local Petco just because its closer but I will make the trip to Petsmart.

Wow I didn't know that they had a scale outside the vet place. I was just wondering what Morgan weighed today! I wonder if their open tomorrow? Thanks for the info.
We did a weight thing in the past because I asked it and people did say some grow til there atleast 4-5 years old. Morgan stopped growing after a false pregnancy and lost weight. She is just over a year old and now has filled out even more than before her issues.

I got Snuffles when he was almost 2 1/4 years old. I think he weighed in at 110 his first vet appointment. At 7, and early last week, he is 146. He has been holding that weight since around the first of the year. The vet has always said he did not feel overweght either. I always ask at appointments. He did make like a 5 pound jump last fall, but I still think it is the vet's scale being moved so many times during th remodel at the clinic. BTW, I always heard Snuffles dad grew till he was 5.

Lizzie is almost 17 months and just recently had a growth spurt. She's my first newf so I'm always curious to see how she grows...

Baloo grew and filled out until he was almost 4. I have a friend in OK whose newfie girl didn't quit growing until she was almost 3.. I think it depends a lot of their family tree;) hehe

Actual growth plates ...the bones...close by the time they are two years old, and in most cases, by 18 months. The "growth" that we see afterwards is musculature and filling out..and that can often mean a significant amount of weight too. Fullness of coat also contributes. Sometimes they even seem to grow in height, but that's also muscling over the shoulders etc.

Cole will be 4 in May and he's been filling out for the past year. It's slowed down a lot, tho, so I think he's all grown now...or just about. However, in the past 6 months he's finally been getting his full coat.

He reached his full height at around 3 years. But after 12 mos there were only slight differences intermittently...which added up to about an inch and a half between 1 and 3 yrs of age. I do remember that at the age of 2 yrs 7 mos, he was higher in the rear again, and leveled out a couple of weeks later.

At a year he was 133 lbs, at two he was 145 lbs and at three and a half...155-157...which is right about where he stays. His line isn't large, yet he and his half brother, Katie Sidesinger's Mojo, are larger than the others in their lines. Those two got the "big" gene somewhere. LOL So just because the lines are smaller, doesn't mean there won't be one or two that pick up a gene from WAY back and surprise everyone.

Frankie is 11 mos (will be 1 in May), and even tho he's almost as tall as Cole, he's definitely MUCH more slender, and just gangly. It doesn't show in the pics, but it shows when he's wet. He has a "bigger" coat, so tends to look larger than he really is. His head's huge, and his bone is heavy ... so he's got a lot of growing to do yet. He weighs about 137ish right now. I suspect he'll be taller and larger than Cole is. He comes from larger lines.

Does he look like a bobble head dog when he's wet lol? Ozzy had a "big coat" when he was a pup, and then he'd run into the water and when he came out he always looked like he needed help to carry his head. Even now, as an 8 year old, people always look and say OMG he's HUGE, but in actual weight, he is pretty much exactly the same size as Nik, but Nik has a normal coat.

My girl's growth seemed to nearly come to a full stop at about 10 months. She'll be 13 months tomorrow and last week I swear she got an inch taller overnight. I used to have to bend ever so slightly to pat her withers, but now I don't have to. I'll have to weigh her tomorrow when she goes to doggy day care to see if she's gained in accordance to the height increase. She was 118 at last weigh-in. She's from pretty large stock, so I imagine she'll end up finishing out quite large for a female.

I enjoy hearing everyone's stories on here. Too bad everyone isnt closer and all the dogs could meet. Would love to Boz with another Newfie. He LOVES to play. Doesn't have any friend his own size.

Out of curiosity do Newf puppies have periods where they grow up and seem all legs? Ours in 15 weeks old and has shot up in height but not much change in weight. You can feel his ribs, shoulders, and hip blades right now. He is fed 4 times a day (Raw) and just seems to keep getting taller?

Thanks!

Zuzu went through stages where she seemed to be all legs, then her legs would look short, then her back legs would look longer than her front...made me dizzy. :) At her ortho check 2 weeks ago the vet said her growth plates hadn't closed yet and she's 15 months.

Her mom was around 125 and very fluffy - Zuzu takes after her in coat but I think she may end up a bit bigger than her mom. Comparing her to Cooper who has "correct" conformation, she is leggy and doesn't have the shape/balance to her frame that he does, so "bigger" than her mom, who is a ch show dog, is sort of a relative term. ;)
