Grey colored newfoundlands

Can anyone tell me more about grey newfs, since they are not excepted by the FCI, and approved by the AKC?

Did they breed with other colors, do they compete on dog shows, are they common among breeders in the USA?

Also, I would appreciate if someone can post some pics of grey newfs, I didn't find any on the net? Thank you very much

The President of the New Pen Del Newfoundland Club has Greys. I don't really have the answers to your questions. I think the greys are relatively new.

The UK Kennel Club do not recognise grey as an acceptable colour in Newfs. I've never heard of there being any in the UK (although I'm sure they mus crop up occasionally) and certainly have never seen one in the flesh.

Here's a photo of a gray Newf pup that I took at the Nationals, his eyes are gray, too. The owner has an adult also and told me that the pup will get grayer as it gets older. Well, don't we all?

So, if gray is a dilution of black and is recognized, why is cream not even acknowledged since it is a dilution of brown? I just KNOW Bailey would have been a grand champion!

It is said that gray's have more skin problems and that's why it isn't recognised by the FCI, though i don't know how true that is?

There are occasionally litters with grays coming out, there was one a few year back in Terhotarha. (http://www.terhotarha.com/)

they tend to have more skin issues, but many will deny that, i have seen several in my area up north that did have issues.

The grey Newfs that I have had are of two types: the ones with the balding genes, and the ones that have the same coat as a Black Newf. The balding gene ones had basically little to no coat on their ears and had skin issues, some skin issues worse than others. The other greys were your typical Newf. You can tell if you're going to have a balding gene grey pretty early on, once they put on a little more coat at 3 weeks or so...

I Am going to be picking up a grey and white in a few weeks..... good thing to know about the skin problem I am going to have to talk to the breeder about that.

The balding grey will have leather ears, that is the easiest way to tell if they will have sparser coat. my first newf was a grey she had leather ears, not much hair on them in other words.

Wilbur's Mom is a grey, she is a beauty. Wilbur is very black though, with a little white on his chest.

just finished talking to a breeder regarding greys and she believes that the grey has a tendency to have heart problems they need to be watched very closely. Also she said that the thinning of the hair on the ears is a sign of heart problems. Not sure how true this is but I found it interesting
