I am new to this forum and would like to say hello. I joined, as I assume many do, to continue my research into this breed, as we (my wife and I) are looking to obtain a new family member, a newfoundland puppy. We recently (October) lost one of our family Surrender, a 13 yr+ old Shepard/Rottweiler mix. My wife has expressed that she wants a Newf and so here I am. We have been reading and researching all winter. We are presently seeking to identify an honest breeder and arrange to purchase. During this process I came across this forum. FYI, we are located in VA, specifically Spotsylvania. I have a 6 year old Rottie/Lab mix that is the most fun loving goofy dog anyone has seen. He is totally social and just a blast. I have 5 acres of woods, cleared trails, and a fenced back "area" (1/4 acre plus) with a pool, ponds, a piano waterfall, 15' self-made Tree Ent sculpture, etc....(jakyle8701@flickr.com) Bottom line the pup we get will be spoiled and, well by now you all get the picture. Feel free to check out the "yard" at the site listed. So any wisdom, suggested breeder etc... all advise is welcome, that is why I joined this site.

Hello and WOW! I want to come live at your place!

On this forum, we cannot publicly endorse any breeder, and there are very good reasons why we don't. The main one being to protect you and all of us from any number of trolls or unscrupulous people who may be reading our posts. So be cautious of anyone contacting you to see if you care to buy one of their pups. You need to research any breeder you're interested in first.

There are some very good threads on this forum about finding responsible breeders, so spend some time searching for those using the search function at the top of this page.

But, the best way to find a responsible breeder is to join your regional Newf Club and to also check out the Newfoundland Club of America's (NCA) breeder list. You'll find a list of Regional Clubs on the NCA website also.

Joining and becoming involved at the local level will dramatically improve your chances of finding a good breeder and they will be far more receptive if they get to know you. Plus you will learn a lot of first hand knowledge about the breed. It's my No. 1 recommendation for someone looking for a pup.

Don't rule out rescue from a regional Newf club either. It's a great place to find a companion dog that may be a perfect fit with your family. Many of the members of this board have wonderful rescued Newfs.

Good luck in your search!

Thanks for the quick response. I have a passion for building the "stuff' in the backyard. I am excited to see a Newf swimming away in either/or the pool and pond. I have reached out to the Colonial regional Club and I will use the link you provided also. I always make my own decisions but I was hoping some of the members here might know some contact/networking that I could stat with. We had a Great Dane (Giant size at that) from a rescue years ago... he lived to be 10+ and was 185lbs, Harlequin, "Hank" and was a favorite of all my kids. My wife really wants a pup this time. Thanks again

A yard with a water feature, AND a pool? Any newf pup would be happy to live with you. :) Good luck in your quest for the right breeder, and right pup. I look forward to stories and pics!

Welcome from Newf Hampshire!

Good luck in your search. Most, if not all on this forum feel that newfs are the creme de la creme of dog breeds.
