further complications

As last reported, Buckley was fine after having his incision (from neutering, which he licked open) reclosed on Saturday. On Sunday, he was fairly lethargic, being off his regular eating schedule, and a bit stressed from wearing the hard cone. So, I pretty much left him alone and didn't really inspect the area.

On Monday morning, I rolled him over for a look, only to discover that his scrotum was badly swollen. A quick look on the web seemed to indicate that this is not all that uncommon.

Nevertheless, I took him back to the vet. They recommended applying cold compresses for a couple of days. Well, you can imagine how that went over!

So, for now, I'm just keeping an eye on it. Seems a little less swollen today. He's into third day of antibiotics (Cephelexin), no painkillers.

His behavior seems pretty normal and he's been energetic at the usual times. While he hasn't got back to his eating schedule, he is eating near normal amounts, which I reduced a bit. It does not seem to be bothering HIM, but it's bothering ME! (Paging Dr. Freud!?)

Just wondering whether anyone else has had a similar experience? (I'm going to search old threads now.)

Be sure to feed him before the AB's. The AB's can upset their tummies.
As far as the swelling goes, just keep him mellow and it will go down. It does seem to swell with too much activity.

I should have searched first! Duh!! I see Megan posted about Bojie having "elephant sack", is how she put it I believe! ;)

Nessa said that Pooka enjoyed the application of a bag of frozen peas to the affected area.

Buckley ... not so much!

Anyway, I can stop freaking out now!

Yes, Lilly, I am giving him food prior to the antibiotics. Those things always create havoc in my digestive system, and it's probably pretty similar for them.

I hand sewed a small 'magic bag' in the correct shape of the inflicted area and applied that after it had sit in the freezer. Sometimes the sack fills with fluid during the healing process, totally normal. Anyway, Sulley didn't mind the bag, but he didn't like me touching it, it was raw and it hurt and they shaved him right down, so he had razor burn on his belly. A few days of mama fussing and cold magic bags on the nut sack made things better.

a pro-biotic may also help if he starts to have loose stools.

We had complications from Boum's neutering. He ended up with a nasty, pussy, green infection in his gastropexy incision. He wore a cone the whole time so we couldn't figure it out at first - turns out he could reach it with his back paws and was tearing at it with his nails. It looked AWFUL - inflamed, pussy, swollen. We were given meds, cream, and soap - took quite a while to get the infection under control and to get him to leave it alone! Not quite what you're going through, but close. Like you, I think it bothered me more than Boum!

Well, Buckley is doing better. The swelling has abated but, even with a new cone that he hasn't been able to remove, he still managed to get at the outer sutures. Luckily, the inner sutures were fine and that part is fully closed. I suspect that he somehow rubbed on it with the front edge of the cone.

There are really only four hours during the night when no one is awake in the house, so he must be doing it then.

Anyway, it looks like it's just going to take a little more time than normal for it to heal. Til then, he's going to have to suffer with the cone!
