Furminator or ?

Hello,
I have a 3 year old male and this is my first Spring with him. He is blowing his coat. What is the best tool to help get all of that undercoat out. I bought a Furminator, the one for giant breeds, long hair. I know they're great for shorter coats, but I'm not convinced that it's the best thing for such a long haired dog. It pulls and gets caught in the longer hairs and is uncomfortable for him. Is there something else that works better? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!
Scott

See if you can return it, rake is best for getting the undercoat out and you'll see many threads here about the mars coat king, which is another great tool.

Toss the furminator. Get a good rake and keep brushing! A blower is also great to help out - just don't use it inside the house!

Yup. Get rid of that Furminator, it'll destroy his coat. Instead buy a rake and a Mars Coat King (18 blade, double-wide). Here's the links: http://www.amazon.com/Evolution-W6110-Grooming-Undercoat-Rotating/dp/B0002DIRYG

I own that one (the double row, rotating teeth) and for as cheap as the price is, it's lasted through 5 coat blows. The thing is awesome)

With the MCK, you have to be careful with it and line comb him, otherwise you could groom him bald

i start with poodle comb, then move to a flat comb, and if I can't get the flat through it, it's time to thin it a little with the MCK.

I currently use these to help with undercoat blowing

Master Grooming Tools Ultimate Coarse Comb it has a wide handle and the teeth dont dig in like a poodle comb does.

look at my thread I did recently on coarse combs , its nice as its easy to grip and does the job.

I also use a Mikki Undercoat rake anti tangle it has two rows of teeth that are sprung loaded and its great for getting undercoat out without damaging the guard hairs

Great info! I was logged on to post and ask about the Furminator because a friend gave one as a gift and I tried it out today. Scarlett does not shed very much yet and in the past I have just combed her out with a soft brush because of her baby coat, but tried the Furminator out since she has started shedding more recently. That tool took out a big clump of her fur and I stopped because I got scared I would pull out fur that was not meant to come out.
What age do newfs get their full adult coat and start blowing their coat usually and when should I start using the fancier brushes?

you won't miss it...you'll see it start growing in at the top base of her tail and a few other places, she'll start getting a longer, darker coat that will stand out like crazy against her puppy fur. each dog is different, but i think normally around 6 months you start to see it.

You know, the most useful tool for coat blows (in my house anyways) has been this: http://www.amazon.com/Evolution-W61...1&keywords=evolution+rake+double+row+rotating

It is not fancy and obviously not expensive, but works very well. I like using the Mars Coat King, but like the Furminator, can take out more coat than you would like if you're not very careful with it. Mine I use mainly on Mila's chest and on her Yak-butt, primarily for thinning out those areas. It's not my main tool for coat blows though.

I use one of the spring loaded rakes as well and its really good plus I use a thick handled coarse grooming comb.

do like the mars coat king but you do have to be careful. dont like the furminator

I just wrote a review for the comb that Charlie mentions. Highly recommend it - very sturdy & teeth are blunt so one doesn't have to worry about the dogs skin. Too many similar combs have very sharp teeth.

Yup! Use the MKK sparingly, using it too much and you can strip Guard Hairs which you don't want. A good Rake will do wonders.
