Frozen raw meats

We found a local pet supplier that sells packaged frozen raw meats for dogs. Kodi had raw bison added to his kibble. He went absolutely nuts over it
He seemed more contented and relaxed after eating. We also purchased the frozen beef/tripe mix. How often can these raw meats be given with kibble and how much? Is it good for a Newfie? Are these types of raw meat fattening? Kodi also eats carrots, string beans, broccoli, apples and bananas.

Hi brenda, when i looked into feeding raw meats with kibble research showed it was very bad to do both,
you either do raw and BARF or you do commercial.
OTOH when morgan was preggy, she wanted raw hamburger, that was it, raw liver, broccoli, canned venison from wysong, and the Architype, so she switched from kibble for the pregnancy and than after the pups, went back to kibble, she told me what she wanted, and i fed it to her, along with that, yogurt, cottage cheese and other things.
but if i were you, i would see if anyone in your area by you is doing the BARF diet, and ask them anything you can so you can be advised by someone in person who is knowlegable.
good luck.....

When I worked for a well known newfie breeder a few years ago they always fed raw meat with the kibble. I would guess it is your own preference. By the way, when I say well known breeder--these people had the #1 newfie in U.S. in conformation and he was also BOB at Westminster so I am sure they are knowledgeable about the need of the breed.

Just my 2 cents worth

Kodiak i would still err on the side of caution with this, you need to talk to someone who KNOWS the exact measurements of raw and kibble
personally i would not do it, but jeanie would, so please talk to someone near you who can best advise you on this.
a tiny portion of raw meat is ok, but i have found myself included i overdoo things

there is a BARF list you can join temporary and post to them and see what they say.

congrats to that person who won BIS at westminster, what year was that?
Also i think nutricion is one of those things with varying opinions just as how to raise kids! LOL
with that said, it would be better stated that they know what is best for "their dogs,or it is "their" opinion this diet is what is best for the newfoundland breed" becouse there are many out there that believe different.
you wouldnt happen to know if they fed like a half and half diet?
as far as being number one newf in the country that isgreat,.
i know many newfs that worked very hard in SAR that deserve proper credit due to them, but they never get it, instead sit in the shadows.
they have to be in top physical health to do that work, and diet plays an important role in their working abilities.
after a particular hard day on a search i would add some raw liver to the kibble for energy purposes etc.....
but that was only becouse i knew they needed the extra nutricion.
it is neat reading everyones opinions on diet and what they feel is best for them and their own dogs.

First it was not BIS it was BOB(Best of Breed) I don't want to name the year because if I do that I may as well just say their names. They fed raw ground beef mixed with the kibble. I would say it was 3/4 kibble and 1/4 beef for the kennel dogs and a bit more beef for the showing or breeding ones.

I don't think it is taboo to say who I worked for, I just feel it would be like recommending a breeder and THAT is taboo on this forum.

We give Rory some kibble and vegetables and often, some raw meat - beef or chicken, sometimes lamb.

We avoid all canned dog food these days - we believe it negatively affects her incontinence.
