Food suggestions for allergies

Can anyone give me some suggestions for types of food to try for our Newf who seems to have allergies of some kind. He gets hot spots and his ears are all yucky. The vet said it is probably a food allergy. I think we need to stay away from a chicken based food so any suggestions? Grain free? A different protein? Thank you!

There are a lot out there and while some people believe anything bad written about this brand, we've had great luck with Blue Buffalo lamb and rice.

Elvis had terrible issues his first year of life - bad ears, raw spots on his belly - and his vet suspected a food allergy. She told us to cut out beef, corn, wheat, and chicken. We did, and he's been itch free for 5 years now. We also had to cut out most commercial dog treats and bones, but luckily he thinks a baby carrot is just as exciting as a bully stick.

The only way to know for sure would be to have him food allergy tested.

You could try a grain free food with a protein source that is not used much. Such as buffalo, salmon, wild boar and so on.

Our Kandy had skin issues and the Dermatologist recommended a food that is Kangaroo based. She is doing awesome on it. I'll find out more and post ingredients.

I should add that we were told to start with lamb since he had never had it, but if he reacted to that then we would have tried a fish and potato based food.

We feed Proplan turkey and rice to Bailey and Sarah. Sarah has severe allergies and does well on proplan. Ginger eats the formula for sensitive stomach. Not the shredded formula.

As Jeannie said, allergy testing is the only way to know for sure. You can try a limited ingredient diet - elimination diet essentially. If that helps, you can slowly reintroduce other foods to try to pinpoint the culprit. Keep in mind it could be multiple things. For us, certain proteins cause Maggie severe stomach issues, certain grains cause severe ear problems.

We ended up doing the testing, and it really gave us a clear picture as we now know to stay away from lots of different grains and proteins.

We are in the same boat as you...$500 at dermatologist on Thursday...and more to come. We are currently trying Taste of Wild Bison.

We went RAW..with ours, because we had so many issues and a lot of ours is kangaroo (RAW) Kangaroos here are treated very much like deer are over in the USA/Canada. there are so many and they are everywhere. I found anything with food colouring and preservatives and all those numbers is what sends Annabelle off on her hot spots and bad ears. I used to think she was allergic to chicken, but not organic RAW chicken.Sometimes it is also what the animals are fed ....so beef/pork and chickens kept and fed lots of grain can trigger a dog like Annabelle...pasture fed anything she is fine with. that is why kangaroo often gives no problems as they are pasture fed (free). We are lucky as most of the stock in Australia, except for pigs and chickens are still kept in open pastures and not feedlotted.
We did get Annabelle tested and she was tested positive to being allergic to wheat, food colouring, preservatives and a multitude of numbers (so easier just to cut them all out)

We had some luck with the odd proteins, like Buffalo and Pork based kibble but when it came to our seasonal allergies only the raw has helped us.

As a person dealing with these issues from a human perspective I find it very interesting but hardly surprising to see them cropping up in our pets. Our food supply is corrupted. The canaries are dropping all around us and big agri does not want us to see them. Most of us don't want to see them either. It is a huge problem when our food is making us sick.

In humans, food allergies frequently indicate a problem in the gut. The gut is our first line of defence for our immune system. Strange but true. Heal the gut, improve your health. There are many diets out there to improve your gut health: scd, gaps, paleo, autoimmune protocol paleo. Largely, they rely on eating organic veggies and protein, healthy fats and limited fruits and eating some organ meats and fermented foods. Avoid processed foods, sugars and grains and chemicals. I'm not sure what the optimal diet for dogs would be but given that we coevolved my bet is it isn't far off our own.

Off my soap box now. 😄
