Evaluating a dog for show

Evaluating puppies for “potential” show quality is just that – potential. What you may or may not see in an 8 week old puppy does not always equate to what they will be as an adult. It is a “guess” at best. There are many breeders, if not most, that have placed a puppy in a show home that did not turn out to be show quality for various reasons. And, they have also placed puppies into pet/companion homes, which turned out better than any other puppy in the litter, and they later wished they had kept. It happens all the time, even to those who have been breeding for years!

I would also offer to show a dog that may have been evaluated and placed as a pet/companion, and later showed great potential to be in the conformation ring. If a pet/companion puppy later shows promise of being in conformation, then it will be re-evaluated, and if we are in agreement, I will change the registration so it can be shown. If they are willing to do this, great! If not, then I am just as happy knowing that the puppy is in a loving home – this to me is far more important than all else.

For a puppy placed in a show home, the contract states that there are no guarantees that a puppy will grow up to be “show quality.” And I also ask that if this happens, then they do not show them in conformation, but certainly do other things such as obedience, rally, water and draft work.

Yes, breeders love to see VNs and ROMs on their dogs/puppies. Certainly something I am working towards with Saphira (VN and WA). I would be absolutely thrilled to see her get a ROM. However, and this is just me, I would much prefer to see working titles, especially Obedience on my puppies. I know they have a better chance of being well adjusted members of their family and in public. I would take this over a conformation title any day of the week!

With a giant breed dog (or any breed for that matter), temperament, being well socialized and well-mannered, and being healthy and well-cared for are things I feel are more important that any title available. And any puppy, whether placed as a pet/companion or a potential show puppy, can accomplish this.
