Duralactin

Anyone giving Microlactin? Same thing but...price is way different from Duralactin.
Roger's been on Microlactin for 5 days and he is walking up the deck steps with no problem where as before he would hesitate stepping back and forth. I also noticed today that he is walking down the steps too, where as before he would step down one step with his front feet and jump the rest of the way.

Yes, I give the human kind Microlactin as Duralactin is not available in Canada, and I'm so pleased with Gracie's improvement.

Since I have a herd, I give the Duralactin granules - Equine version. And the dogs LOVE it. It smells like vanilla. LOL

There is a dosage calculation that you need to use, however. Here's what I came up with:

It comes with a scoop. The scoop full is 7000 mgs. The scoop equals 2 Tablespoons.

There are 3 teaspoons in each Tablespoon. So there are 6 teaspoons in that scoop.

Take the 7000 mg in the scoop and divide it by 6 teaspoons = 1166 mg per teaspoon,

3/4 teaspoon is ~874mg, 1/2 teaspoon is ~583 mgs, and 1/4 teaspoon is ~291.6 mgs. (No I didn't calculate by thirds, LOL)

I'd stay a little UNDER the dose when measuring these granules. I've read that you can overdose (probably causing stomach/intestinal upset) so it's better to stay under a little rather than give too much.

For example (BASED ON DOSAGE/WEIGHT CHART BELOW): For a 120+ lb dog, you'd give either a little UNDER 1 3/4 tsp or a little OVER 1.5 tsp twice a day. Or just give the 1.5 tsp and that should be close enough depending on how much over 120 lbs the dog is. ha

And for the weight table that was posted in another thread:

Dose - based on 1000 mg tablets

Under 40 lbs........................1/2 tablet (500 mg) twice a day
40 to 80 lbs ..........................1 tablet (1000 mg) twice a day
81 to 120 lbs.........................1 1/2 tablets (1500 mg) twice a day
Over 120 lbs .........................2 tablets (2000 mg) twice a day

Excellent, Donna! I have a tub of the equine formula on order, so I will be referring back to this when it gets here. Thanks!
Did you get the regular formula or the joint formula with Gluc/Chond?

I got the regular formula Becky. I give Gycoflex III along with it, to those who need it. I prefer to stick with the regular formula. That way I can adjust dosage of each supplement as needed. Plus if there's an issue, I know what's causing it, and can eliminate or reduce if necessary.

I am going to check to see if I can eliminate the Gycoflex while using this. I'll play around a bit.

Active ingredient per tablet..... MicroLactin® 1,000 mg

Dose
Under 40 lbs........................1/2 tablet twice a day
40 to 80 lbs ..........................1 tablet twice a day
81 to 120 lbs.........................1 1/2 tablets twice a day
Over 120 lbs .........................2 tablets twice a day

I bought the equine. I give Sam 1/4 teaspoon twice a day. That is very close to 3000 mg a day

And then this from this thread:

I tried taking Samantha off the Previcox but it didn't work. Friday and Saturday I noticed she was panting a lot. I thought it may be the stress from the storms. Then I remembered she use to pant a lot before I changed her to Previcox. So I gave her a Previcox yesterday evening and she is not panting at all today.

It is safe to give Duralactin with an Nsaid. I was hoping to get her off Previcox but it seems I won't be able to. I have seen lots of positive results with the Duralactin. I will continue to keep her on both. I am going to see if a lower dose of Previcox will keep her comfortable. Tonight I'll give her half the dose she usually gets. I'll keep you posted.
From what I read in the first thread quoted above, you've only been giving 1/4 teaspoon 2x a day of the Equine granules. That only equates to less than 600 mgs per day. That wouldn't be enough for a dog her size. If you want to give 3000 mgs per day (which you also mentioned) you'd need a smidge more than 1 1/4 tsp 2x per day. (See the breakdown above that I did of the equine granules...based on mgs per scoop).

Perhaps if you get her up to the 3000 mgs per day that you were aiming for, you can see if it makes enough of a difference to get her off the Previcox. That would be great if it does!

I'm upping the amount in the morning. Hopefully I can get her off the previcox. She has improved a lot on this little amount. I can't wait to see what this does.

Just don't go all the way up to 1.5 tsp per day...that'll be a bit too much. I'd keep it very close to 1 1/4 tsp per day. They say you can overdose it (I'd guess it would cause digestive upset) on some site I read...so a little lower is better than too much. :)

Good luck!!

WOW!

I found it on amazon for cheap cheap - Microlactin that is and think I'm going to get a bottle of it and try it out on Bava.

I'm a doofus. I bought the equine Duralactin...but got the pellets instead of granules. They're eating it, no problem...but it's hard to measure out!

Thank you so much for this thread! I am putting together a special Father's Day "Senior" package for my Dad and his favorite child (his words, not mine,) our almost 11 year old Irish Setter, Mac. Microlatin for Dad and Duralactin for Mac! I think they'll get a kick out of it and hopefully it will help poor Mac with his hips getting up and navigating the stairs at bedtime!

No, darn it! I guess I was so excited about it, I didn't pay attention. I got the joints plus formula and they're pellets about 3/4-1 inch long. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00196F4I2

I have to say, though.....Skye's only been on it for two days and her limp is markedly better. I hope it keeps improving and we don't go backwards like we did with adequan, chiropractor, and acupuncture

Well, she's getting it all at once, so that's a good thing. Glad to hear it's working out for her!! Keep us posted.

For those in Canada, you can find Microlactin from Swiss natural at the real Canadian superstore.
Did not work for Bär when I had him on it, but at the time he had a lot of digestive upsets, so we don't even know if his system was absorbing anything.
I will be following this thread with interest to see if it works for some of your babys. Might try it again with Bär since the osteo joint ease only does little or nothing without adding aspirin. Especial with the up & down temps we are having.

I got the Swiss Natural from one of the local health food stores. Didn't know it is available in Canadian Superstore.

I finally ordered the Microlactin for Sydney. Hoping it helps her and we can back off of the Tramadol.

I plan on continuing with Dasuquin for Angus (which he is on now) in addition to the Duralactin. Also will be giving Duralactin to Emmy for her myositis, hoping it will help with muscle support and inflammation.
Hi Nancy,
I'm hoping It will help Tiika in her Rt front leg. She limps for a few steps after she first gets up. I think she has a little arthritis from an old injury, but I'm hoping it might also help ward off any more attacks of masticatory myositis so I can think about weaning her cyclosporin even more. Please let me know how it's working for your guys.
