Loki has a sin eruption that respond to Flagyl in the past...What is the correct dose?

Here at the end of Aug, at 145 pounds with a normal poop, the Vet wanted Snuffles on 1000 mg twice a day for other reasons, he got diarrhea. The last time he was on it with another vet was at 500 mg twice per day to clear up a mucus covered loose stool. This last time I cut back to 500 mg and though a bit loose till about 24 hours after the last dose and now back to picture perfect.

My Adam, who is around 145-150 lbs got 1500mg twice a day for giardia. Most times he can get by with 250 mg daily for IBS.

This is just my opinion but Flagyl kills everything in it's path. The digestive tract needs good bacteria so I advise is to ask your Vet or pharmacist what would be a good supplement to get things balanced again. Yogurt would be good.

Metronidazole (Flagyl) is used mostly for loose stool, or diarrhea. There are better broad spectrum antibiotics for skin infections. Flagyl comes in 500mg tabs. You just want to be careful about using antibiotics too often as they can build up an immunity to it like people. Flagyl is a super duper strong antibiotic reserved for very bad intestinal infections in humans. You can start a probiotic while he's on antibiotics or anytime. There are a ton out there, my personal favorite is InClover Optigest.

Flagyl is nasty stuff it usually gives you diarrhea although it can constipate everyone is different. Usually makes you nauseated and upset stomach.

Keflex is usually the go-to drug for skin issues. As Meg said, Metronidazole is a big gun and it can have some awful neurological side effects...

I think you should go to the vet to get the appropriate antibiotics actually (speaking as a nurse!!)

I think so also Angela. It's not a drug to fool with.I have Crohn's disease and have been on it too many times to even think about counting. A necessary evil in my case or any time it's used.

Wayne, yes it is used for Crohn's disease and other bowel diseases. I haven't heard of it being used for skin infections.

Loki has a chronic skin infection issue, she has had one month of Keflex, one month of Cipro, and one month of Bactrim DS in succession....I swear the only time her skin was clear was when she took Flagyl for Giardiasis. Yes we have been to derm. Bumped up flea coverage(never seen a flea). No diet changes, just continued itchy, itchy, itchy. Bathe once a week with moisturizing Selsun Blue. Next step is ex diet of Royal Canine....Have spent over 800.00....still no definitive answer

I don't know anything about Royal Canin, but if it's like what my vet recommended for my dog's skin issues, it's crap. He tried to talk me into Science Diet prescription that had as the first 2 ingredients potatoes and potato starch. I switched to Precise Holistic Complete Pork with Garbanzo beans and her skin is doing fantastic. Hard to find, but I got it a Chewy.com. Free shipping. I would try that first before some of the vet recommended ones.

All I can say is WOW that is one heavy regiment of drugs.I understand we have been battling the rash ,bacteria hotspots ever since I got Kandy best we can get it is manageable. This last flare up the anti biotic did nothing until we added prednizone. A Nightmare. We need the weather to give us a cold winter here. That would help.
