We didn't..really set out to cause a problem..nope..we didn't. Now HB has always taken a ..dim-view of Vultures.."BIIGgg BIRDS"..I would shout..and UP..would snap her head..and ..sight-in..on them, circling over the fields somewhere..and AWwway..she would go..barking and..taking full charge of HER territory. Dang-peskys..anyway! So then the curr. situation..is not causing her any upset at all..but it would seem we are causing ..the bird life..a major migrain. Specifically..the vultures. In actuality..one 'retentive' vulture..(there's jus gotta be One..in every group..ya know?) So here's the thing..I give the pups some beef rib chew bones..most every day..and they entertain themselves with working them, plus assorted joint bones..down to nubbins..over the course of an afternoon, whilst I am dealing with U-pick berry traffic. The days ..are long. The sun..is hot..and the temps have meant that any residual ...stuff..upon those bones..becomes..ummmm fragrant..to the max. The delicious vapors must rise..up through the old pine tree, left-center of the back yard..and paint a vision of an Amazing ..Dineing Experience..just..waiting..to be found. Now..skipping to the..Vulture Experience..such scented-delights..always are ..matched-up..with , well..I'll let YOU supply the ..visuals..around your..life experiences. So here we have had..for several days now..one determined vulture..who leaves the crowd of 8 others..and comes back to sus out..the backyard. He sits..upper portion of the tree..which they HATE to do..getting pine needles stuck around his bum..and pitch on his feet..and pollen on his feathers..while all his mates..are soaring..in the free thermals..down toward the Coburg Hills..and he..jus sits..and studys the ground..'willing'..those tiny bone nubs to..morph/grow/reintigrate..into something..amazingly Delicious. It will HAPPEN..it WILL! Every afternoon..needles up his bum..getting hotter under the feather collar...shifting from foot to foot..memorizing the prime vulture directives..and reciting vulture mission statements..it will..it will...... It Will...... ;) ina n HB n Kesa

What a great visual...I can just see him sitting there hunched over......waiting......waiting.
Guess there is really no free lunch, at least in his case. :)

Great story...I have an affinity for vultures, and I can just picture the one staring out of the tree, completely fixated on the bones  Funny animals, they really seem to me to be full of personality. :) Hamish used to take offense to crows and crows only, which was always amusing to me. It's too bad, because I love crows too and my yard seems to be the only in the neighborhood where they don't hang out!

Well, either he will win the lottery eventually or even in the bird world there are very slow learners. I vote for slow learner. Intelligence must vary in the non-human animal world just as it does in ours. We get turkey buzzards around here which have got to be the grossest birds I have ever seen. About two miles away they have a colony of several hundred that roost together at night. Straight out of Hitchcock!!!
