Deramaxx Question

For those of you who have had experience with your dogs on Deramaxx...did any of you have any problems?

Jake has been on it for a week now, and for the last 2 days he has vomited. The first day, it was immediately after eating breakfast. Yesterday, it was immediately after breakfast and then again at midnight. The midnight vomiting was unusual as he gets his dinner at 4 pm. I am really concerned as I have read some horror stories about this drug after very short usage of healthy dogs dying...

I am calling the vet 1st thing in the morning and am not giving him anymore of this drug until I talk to the vet. Any thoughts???

I haven't given it but one of Owain's relations way back was and nearly died from stomach bleeding. Think they need to be on antacids if taking it. If it continues then go to an Emerg. Clinic.asap.

Also, Metacam is one of the NSAIDS with the least side effects.

Let us know how he is doing.

He hasn't vomited this am...and no blood was in it when he did vomit...I am just not giving it to him anymore...I will ask the vet about Metacam. He seems ok...energy level is high...and he is eating fine and drinking fine. If I see anything new...I will go to emergency vet...

Could be it does not agree with Jake. Maybe you need to try another NSAID. Snuffles has had Deramaxx on and off from about 3 years old to maybe a year and a half ago, and since went daily. We always did 100mg and have doubled it short term like when his neck really was hurting, and never had a issue.

After dog sitting a Newf that was on every other day of Rimadly, and upped it to every other day since with me the dog was walked more, I deceided to do Deramaxx daily. And we did like every other day, and the recommendation from the manufacturer, was to use the smallest does possible in the 1 to 2 mg/KG of dog. So now Snuffles is on 75mg (he is 65 to 68 KG). No problems what so ever even when doubled for a up to a week for other inflammation.

Now I know a older Basset who was on Rimadyl, who they thought was bloating, but turned out there was a hole in the stomach allowing gas into the abdomen. They blamed it on the drug. Not sure what they did.

Guess like every other drug, some works great, and some do no based on the individual.

I would definitely call the vet. I unfortunately also know a Mastiff that died from this drug.

We've had very good success with meloxicam (the generic version of Metacam). It's one you can also get at Walmart from the $4 list.

I would stop it. On the bottle I have my vet made a note that if the dog start vomiting to discontinue immediately.

Adam cannot take any Nsaid except Metacam. They all give him explosive diarrhea. Metacam gives him soft stool but nothing like the rest.

I did stop it today and so far so good...no vomiting...I will ask the vet about the Metacam as the Deramaxx is really expensive also...it scared the crap out of me when I googled it and all of these dogs had died on it...in a short amount of time also...scarey stuff! He is also taking a pain killer along with this so the vet said it worked well with this drug and others didn't...so we shall see...

Glad you stopped it and he is doing better. Mine have all done well on Metacam. When i last used it with Chance it was the liquid form which i was able to vary his dose easily depending on what kind of day he was having. Luckily my vet price matched for me because it was expensive. Now I see it's available in pill for as a generic which is wonderful. You may also want to give milk thistle once things get settled , it helps cleanse the liver, which is good when they are on NSAIDS. The vet should be watching liver enzymes because they can become elevated.
