The headline news makes it pretty clear..that we have..above and beyond the 5% of actual 'insane and mentally defective to a high degree'..people in any 100..of the population..a decent additional number who are out and about in ..anytown, usa..or around the world probably..on any given day, who are of lesser disability, but nonetheless..disabled. They..truely..walk amoung us. A woman is seen about once every 5 to 8 days..walking through the Albertsons parking lot..yelling and screaming at anyone who comes near..has not attacked anyone..so far as I know..but..in her mid fiftys..at what point will she cause a danger? A lit fuse..walking. Closer into town..a few men..are at liberty..but again..they are walking through the town..without their meds..and have not caused problems other than the unease with which one looks up to see someone talking to an imaginary fellow walker, or their version of god. Recitation of a book can be instead..something as basic as reciting the alphabet or raging at a someone who has 'done them wrong'. Most times it is..babble. In conversation with others who are..seeing one of these people..for the first time..or..have grown accustomed to ..walking Way out..of their way to avoid them..I have had conversation with the people who are..as I am startled. I think I recover quickly..within seconds..whereas..I see others who look..truely shaken..as they then reach their car or head for the bus stop. At about 2:30 am this morning..as I woke up and mused about the Florida kerfluffles..I had one of those 'ah ha'..moments. At age 15 years..my mom came home and found me in tears..because the old woman who had..what we now call dementia..had come down the road, and into our house, wandered around and then left..after calling out my mothers name. She had not yet taken to the wandering nude stage..but 'mentally gone'..she was. That chance encounter scared me deeply..and so..as mother settled me down, after she returned home ( I had gone to hide on the sun porch..not knowing what to do..and being alone in our house)..she began a long..and gentle conversation..which..long story-short..talked about mental elasticity. She talked about the death of my paternal grandmother, and community disasters like 100 year floods and the terrifying barn fire at the Page ranch..when I was 5 yrs old. In one..probably hour long talk..with her leading me through..thinking, about..thinking..she took me forward..to a place in my heart and mind..where..I can 'see'..into the human-world..inside..the ..skin envelope..any person wears-inhabits. I now know..if it is a ..fight or flight time. Most of all..she gave me the feeling of the interior ..Geographys..of the human soul..if you will. When one walks amoung others..human and animals..it is like..the holding on to the combing..as you work your way around a boat..out on the river. There are so many waves..coming/flooding/flowing/ebbing..that there is..perpetual motion..but..as you practise..you..'learn the feel'..of equalibrium. So..I have never needed to march in a group, nor burn a book nor stand up and yell in a meeting. I think..if we all were to teach what..Elasticity..was about..we might well..create a more ..civil society. Kindness..should not be allowed to be burned to a crisp. ina n HB n Kesa
