Just got some results back - my baby carries brown - it also says she carries one copy of the d gene - what does this mean ? she carries grey or not ??? She is Dd ??

I need to brush up on my genetics, but to get grey there has to be the dilute gene, which she has. However, since she is also brown recessive, if she was bred to a boy who also carried the brown and dilute recessives, you could get creme.

I did the gray color test on my girl, and she is carrying the gray gene which is listed as:
Dd C.22G>A+/-

That's what they put on my results and having no idea what it meant I called and was told, yes she is gray recessive.

Yes - she automatically carries grey as her mother was grey. And yes, if she is mated to a male that carries grey she can produce grey puppies. This is very basic colour genetics that any breeder should know especially having been involved in/bred the colour. (as anyone who produces or is involved in brown or black & white colour should know at least the basic genetics behind brown / black & white before breeding these colours).

And as Susan added, if she is mated to a male that carries both grey (Dd or dd) and brown (Bb or bb), there is the possibility of producing cream coloured newfs (bbdd).

I understand what she should carry and waht she will produce - I simply have not used colour testing services before I was unsure how to read the results - I dont just want to rely on what 'Should' be produced from what as people have found out to their cost that relying on who 'Should not ' carry cystinuria does not work as two non carriers have been known to have progeny that carry the condition.

I looked into the basic genetics in 2008 onwards - but being dyslexic the letters merge into one another

OK, good.

Is that a new case? I know of only the case at the beginning (2005-ish) where a cystinuria affected was noted as only being a carrier due to a lab student's mistake (of not believing the results and believing that it was safer to put it as a carrier than affected - or something in those lines). Since that I have not heard of cases, though I can very easily guess another reason for two non-carriers producing carriers ;). That's one of the reasons why ALL the puppies registered to the Belgian Kennel Club must be DNA tested for parentage.

I think that should be the case here in England too - it would stop quite a few litters from happening that shouldnt !

It would be great if this would put unreputable breeders out of business, but here in the U.S. they just create their own 'registry' and sell under that. Its really sad that the general public can be so easily cheated. Being heavily involved in rescue I see A LOT of crazy things. The latest was a young lady who needed to surrender her 'Registered Newfoundland' whom she purchased as a puppy from a 'Breeder' (I use that term loosely in this case) in Michigan. When we asked her to send us photos of her 18 month old boy, there was no doubt he was not a Newfoundland and probably didn't have any Newf ever in his genetics. She was shocked, and swore that he was a Registered Newf, so we asked to see his 'Registration' along with information of who his 'Breeder' was....Needless to say, it was a person who no longer has the cell number they used to sell her the puppy, and the 'Registration' is Continental Kennel Club. A very well known BYB Registry that someone started out of their back room by just having you send them money and they would send you a 'Registration'. No controls of the breedings, etc. Its a money making scheme that BYB's are utilizing on their own behalf to skirt around keeping pedigrees, let alone keeping a purebred.

Sadly this woman was taken for a large sum of money, but fortunately for the dog, he was taken in by an all breed rescue.

Continental Kennel Club.....Wow. that would be a catch for the not so experienced puppy buyer, very sad

I have spoken to people who were told a pup was CKC reg, which they took to mean Canadian Kennel Club, when in fact it was Continental. Have heard of the same thing with UKC...Universal Kennel Club, not United Kennel Club

This is why it's up to us to educate the public in a kind way. It's the only way we can battle this. it's very sad and the dogs are the ones who pay for it.

Yes, I have too. Talked to someone who had newf swore was registered and was with APRI. There is host of fly by night registries set up to deceive. It's a sad situation.

I guess BYB's will go over the length to do anything they can to get theirs 'registered', amazes me!
