cut on nose

When I opened the door to let Buckley in from the yard last night, his face was covered with blood!! He hadn't barked to come in, just a quick scratch on the door. I was pretty freaked out, but stayed calm so as not to upset him. He didn't seem to be reacting much, no whimpering, etc. I got a bowl of clean water which he immediately drank. That cleaned off his face enough for me to see the cut on his nose, at the tip of the right nostril. The vet said to put a clean, wet washcloth or gauze around his muzzle and apply light pressure, which I did. After a bit more bleeding it stopped.

The vet said to call back if that didn't work and to bring him in the morning. He slept fine during the night and ate his usual breakfast, did his business in the yard, etc., all without any sign of pain or discomfort.

We went this morning and I have to bring him back at 1 o'clock for stitches. They said they'll have to put him under briefly.

He had been sleeping in a muddy hole he'd dug over the last week or so. Each time he goes out, he digs a wee bit before settling down. The only thing I can think of is that a sharp stone, like a sliver of slate (there's lots of "bluestone" around this area that chips like slate) must have cut him. It looks like it was sliced with a knife, very clean. The dirt that came out of the hole had plenty of small, smooth stones and I hadn't noticed anything sharp.

So, I'm still freaking a little bit ... I'll feel a lot better when he's stitched up and back home with me.

Anyone else have experience with a cut to their dog's nose or face?

I have seen a dog with a cut on his nose, but I do not remember the circumstances. If you look at closeups of Snuffles nose, you see some white like scar tissue like he skinned his nose. I noticed that after he became mine. Not sure when it happened.

I know in our back yard, every now and then like when I am planting my tomato plants in the spring, I dig up a piece of glass. How about a sharp burr on fencing or maybe the door itself???

Shoot not long ago, I was putting a envelope in someone's mail slot and noticed I was bleeding afterward. I guess that slot door had a sharp burr on it. So many hazards out there for sure!

Sorry about the cut..and hope all now..goes well. I am wondering if..instead of the slate..there might have been actual broken glass..if the yard area is where a number of people have lived..over a fairly long..timeframe? Slate is able to inflict such cuts..that is true. ina n HB n Kesa

Geez, that must be a nasty cut if they want to stitch it!
Ebony's had "bloody nose", as I call it. But hers are minor scratches from the cats. They bleed terribly, but since hers are just cat scratches the bleeding eventually stops and she is better in no time.
Hopefully Buckley heals quickly!

Ask your vet about using old fashioned petroleum jelly on it while it heals - I had a plastic surgeon recommend it for a friend whose cheek was cut - no scar. Of course, my friend couldn't lick her cheek .....

Thanks, everyone ... I'm to pick him up at 4 pm

Keeping busy cleaning up mud and blood from the back hallway so I'm not worrying too much!

Investigation of the area revealed quite a few pieces of sharp slate and a couple of very small pieces of glass. None of these was really loose, but kind of packed into the mud. But, if there were glass in the hole, it could easily have cut him as he was snorfling around while digging.

The house is more than 140 years old, so there is surely a lot of stuff under the soil. In fact, prior to Buckley's arrival home, I cleaned the area thoroughly, first with a garden rake, then a regular leaf rake and picked up hard objects of every kind. But, this treatment didn't extend nearly as far into the soil as Buckley had dug the hole, so ...

anyway, only another 90 minutes of waiting ... off to find more busy work!

best wish's to Buckley and hope he doesn't get into too many more scrapes. Dont worry too much as its like if we cut a finger it bleeds like crazy even from smallish cuts

Ahhh! Poor Buckley! Bojie never had anything that required sutures, but he did get a hold of one of my slicker brushes, and gnawed on it which caused an abrasion on his snozzle. It healed itself, and now, you can't even tell.

Thanks, again, everyone! ...

The patient is resting comfortably and wearing his E collar. They did a nice job closing the cut and I'm sure he'll be fine.

He's still a little woozy, but I suspect he's not going to like the collar when he fully revives!

Poor Buckley :hugs: to him and :hugs: to his stressed Mom........
Just remember that facial injuries bleed a lot, but also heal a lot better and quicker. So good, positive healing thoughts to Buckley, take care
